Hello all,

As we have bright skies at the moment I want to try playing with a GND filter, I want a 58mm threaded one - I can find loads of ND filters but GNDs seem thin on the ground. Anyone got one ? suggestions on where I might find one ?

Thanks

generally the screw on types are useless as the graduation is in the middle and most landscapes are not seperated half by sky and by land. most GND filters are available as a square mount like cokin, lee filters, hi-tec to name a few.

cokin are your cheapest but they have known to have a colour cast butt hat may have been corrected

on and :welcome:

By GND to you mean Graduated ND filters?

I thought this was only true of the older Cokin filters as they weren't ND bit actually grey which they've since corrected

as said in my post it may have been corrected but you dont know how old stock is on shelves. So there is still a slim chance.

The problem with screw in grads is that the grad is never in the right place. You are better off getting the rectangular ones and a holder. That way you can pt the grad just where you want it.

Cokin are the cheapest, but Lee are probably the best. However there is a significant price difference. If you want to experiment, get the Cokins and if need be upgrade to Lee.

By coinicidence I bought some ND Grad filters yesterday and they are due to be delivered today. I am relatively new to photography so needed a bit of hand-holding and the company I contacted were excellent.

Their website is www.teamworkphoto.com and they sell Lee and Hitech filters. These are all square and you will need to buy a mounting frame and probably an adaptor ring. If you need advice call them and ask to speak to a chap called Moses who was really helpful yesterday and offered loads of practical advice. For the record I bought a 100mm Lee holder and adaptor and 0.6 and 0.9 soft grads and a 0.6 hard grad. This was a little more expensive than the standard kit of 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 but I was advised that with digital photography the 0.3 offers little benefit and is rarely used.

Good luck and I'm off to the Lake District to experiment with my filters.

Dovercourt photography seem to be the cheapest for Cokin filters. I priced up an adaptor, holder and an ND Grad filter for less than £30 (not inc postage).

Thanks all, I had seen the plate type filters, but just figured a screw one would be less hassle, I appreciate why there aren't that many about now!

Interestingly, I've just used teamwork too for Lee holder and Hitech GNDs and NDs...

Have yet to test em out as just awaiting 82mm adapter which is out of stock. But the're service was superb. Rang me straight up to discuss and put me fully in the picture regarding delivery etc.
