Glass.photo: users thread

I have rebooted my activity on Flickr a bit too. I've joined some groups etc

One of my photos, which I really didn't think was particularly good, got into explore and then I got loads congratulatory comments which is nice, but I don't think really reflected the quality of the photo. I think the algorithm for choosing photos might just have picked mine because I hadn't posted much for a while!

One thing I've discovered since I started using Glass is that the notification sound is a camera shutter. It's very disconcerting when it suddenly sounds like my phone has taken a photo on its own! So I've turned that off :)

What's the easiest way to link a pic to here? One thing with Flickr is it was so bloody easy .

Ironically, given @gramps reply, it was in response him asking the same question :)

I don`t know if it`s just me being dumb again. But I can`t insert an image from glass again. Now I`m getting a popup box saying it can`t be parsed?

You must be in your Grid view (all photos not THE photo) then:

Right click on the image in Glass,

choose "copy image address"

Paste address into "insert image" option in TP post

Yeah that's what I did. But it didn't let me.

Select the photo you want to link from your MAIN photo page.

Select and click 'Copy image address'.

Thats exactly what I did before. Maybe the site was having a hissy fit ...

I’ve been having a look at Glass and I’m curious how people are actually finding it day to day. How does it feel compared to Flickr in terms of community, feedback, and discovering other work? Before I pay for anything, I’d love to hear some honest thoughts from people who’ve been using it for a while.

I am a recent convert and enjoy Glass.
By searching under the categories I am interested in I have been able to find like-minded photographers that I can learn from. There is the opportunity to make it a community experience and I am doing that. I tend now to think of Flickr as a ‘dumping ground’ and Glass as a ‘portfolio’.
You can join as a ‘viewer’ for free, look around and see how it works before you become a member.
I won’t be renewing Flickr at its current membership cost, I’ll stick with Glass.
So basically check it out before you commit, and the financial commitment of membership is relatively small.

That’s pretty much exactly how I feel about it. I haven’t really got into the social side so much yet, but I’m finding that I much more selective with which shots I upload, rather than the Flickr approach where I might upload 40 or 50 shots at a time (especially if I’ve been to something like an airshow).
Same as Gramps, I won’t be renewing my Flickr account; I haven’t decided yet whether I’ll keep a free account or just bin it off completely. For now though, I’m very happy with Glass.

Now let's get this straight - you've just described how you've chosen to (not) interact with Flickr, rather than analysing the nature of Flickr itself. Flickr has many potentialities - and you can choose how you use it. I can't see that Glass is any different in this regard. In fact it may have lesser scope & fewer options.

Let's try to be clear about everything, & not babies enthusing about our latest toy. And not let the discussion default to the polarising, populist & short-lived stances typical of the internet.

After that, good evening, & I hope you're well ...

How patronising!

Gentlemen, the world is in an unhappy place right now. Let us retain good manners and respect for each other.

Thanks for that. Let me try and explain a bit better. Saying "the Flickr approach" was maybe slightly incorrect; I should have said "my approach to Flickr". What I mean by that is that I see Flickr as a place to put all of my photos (or at least, those that I think are worth sharing after I've gone through my memory card). Flickr themselves make a big deal of unlimited storage, and the iOS app has an option to automatically upload every photo I take with my phone (which I haven't enabled).

If you look at my Flickr photostream you'll see there are several albums such as "RIAT 2022", "Chicago 2024", "Cameraworld Live" etc. These are full of photos from events or trips. The Chicago 2024 one for instance is from a business trip and has 65 photos in it, which when I look at them now have memories for me, but in hindsight I can see that some of the photos are less interesting than others. Similarly, the RIAT and Cameraworld albums are full of photos of planes or cars - great if you're interested in planes or cars, but of little interest to anyone else.

Glass on the other hand, feels to me like somewhere for people more interested in photography, rather than the subjects of the photos. I've uploaded a few car photos there, but only ones that I feel are interesting to look at as a photo (as opposed to "just a picture of a car", if you see what I mean), rather than sixty very similar photos which will be of limited interest to a lot of people.
That's just how I perceive it, of course: other opinions are available :)

At the moment, I'm enjoying being more selective with the photos that I upload, and if I feel like I need to upload an album of shots for family or friends to see I have the option of Amazon photos or (shudder) facebook.

Hopefully that clears everything up! Have a great day - I'm off for a bottle of milk and a nap ;)

Remember to use the photo from your main page NOT on the individual photo itself or you won't get the option to copy image address. :)

After our first discussion on this, I went back to edit my original post, the one on the link I'm sharing, to emphasise the need to use the grid view. but it's useful to clarify what is meant by the grid view.

Humm ? Tried 2 ways and can't get the image to upload all I end up with is the links that you need to click on to see the image.

You aren't alone in having initial problems, but what two ways are you trying?

Gramps and I have only described one way (which is how the images posted here have been posted), which obviously works.

As well as my step-by-step instructions from the previous link I gave you @gramps illustrated part of the process here, which might help.

Can you describe what you are doing?

Will do later as I am going into town now

You're not alone in this. I always have the same issues. I think once you've done it a few times, it'll become second nature.

It's so long since I posted the sample images here, that I had to go back and re-follow my own instructions, to check they were working. See my picture below;

When you post the link into TP, using the insert image icon, are you switching to using the "by url" option, which is the bit that isn't mentioned in the posted instructions, which I will now go back and amend

You seem to be struggling with the instructions on the link I gave you. There is no mention of copying and pasting the" image". :-(

If you can explain which part of the instructions you don't understand, I will further amend the instructions to clarify the problem.

As well as the link that I gave you before, here are the instructions pasted from that link

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

You must be in grid view to use this method (not a single picture view)

Right click on the image in Glass,

choose "copy image address"

Paste this address into the "insert image" option in the TP post menu bar (select the "by url" option once in the insert image dialog box)

This gives clickable full size image in TP, but it doesn't take you to Glass, just opens the picture in a viewer which allows it to be enlarged to a bigger size than shown in the post. I seem to remember now that it has cropped up, that Glass restricts the image size.

Well, lets take it step by step and try and work out where you are going astray

Have you looked at Gramps post and able to get to the grid view and see what the right click menu should look like and what menu choice you should click on. This should add a line of text very much like the one you posted to the . This is the image address or URL.

Now go to TP and open a new message.

In the new message there is an icon in the tool bar that looks like a graphic of a mountain in a picture frame: lying between what looks like a chain link and a smiley face.

Click on this and a dialog box pops up. It opens with a message to drop image here or click here. This is not the option you want.

With that dialog box still open you will see it has two tabs. One with an icon that looks like a chain link; this is the one you want to click on.

This opens another dialog box, with an empty box where you want to paste the link/address that you copied when in Glass.

Once pasted you click on the "insert" button to insert the picture into your TP post.

Good luck :)

OK thanks I will have a look and see how I get on.

Unfortunately, this doesn't look right.

Everyone else's embedded pictures from Glass are a) larger, and b) clickable to open the image in a viewer. Your embedded picture does nothing when clicked.

Is there some obvious point in the instructions where you become unsure about what you should do?

It's probably worthwhile getting it sorted here before trying in other places.
