That is what I suspected.

I think I'm asking a bit much of it, because ideally I would like some series to be sticky at the top, ie things like 'my favourite pictures" or "current project" while others can fall where they fall.

After I got that auto-response email, I had a specific reply within 24 hours.
 
I can't see a way to re-order 'series', nor can I see a way to make certain photos private.
I don't get a popup when I go to the feedback page (Brave squashes popups) but I do see a link to 'Sign in' top right.
I can read each request etc without using that 'sign in' link.

Have you upvoted a request in the feedback, because that is when I get the pop up asking me to sign up.

Making photographs private so you can restrict a link to specific viewers (ie family) is the new feature request I upvoted when I got the pop up.

Bit weird!
I can 'like' a comment and then get the 'Claim Account' popup - I dismiss it and my 'like' has been saved.
If I add a comment to the thread I also get the 'Claim Account' popup - I dismiss it and my comment is added and attributed to 'Anonymous'.
If I claim the account from the popup by adding my email I get a code in my email box - entering it at the site then attributes my comment to the first part of my email address, eg 'fred@gmail.com' will attribute the comment to 'fred'.
Doesn't seem to link a comment to the member making it. :thinking:

I guess, it's a way of allowing non users to comment on things that might be preventing them signing up, and to see possible up coming new features.

But it seems a bit confusing for me. I didn't have the nerve to click on the popup,
 
I guess if you have a small number of people running this in conjunction with their own working life, whatever form that may take, things won't be as slick as a worldwide enterprise.
Initially I was skeptical but I am growing to like it, I think you just have to adjust your individual expectations. For example one post in the Feedback section asks for Private accounts but I wonder if that was ever the intention when the site was setup.
I can understand the desire to have certain photos or even 'Series' to be private but doing so could open up a change to the whole service from photo sharing to photo storing and there are other places for that. I doubt I will cancel my subscription when the trial period is over.

I might be misunderstanding the topic, but I don't see flickr as being algorithm driven (unlike Instagram). The only photos I see in my Flickr feed are from people I have chosen to follow, or which are featured in groups I have chosen to join. Unlike Instagram, I don't see any photos that are "recommended for me" and if a contact uploads a photo then I can see it.

As I started this thread, I feel I need to comment on its topic :)

And it depends on what you think the topic is

It's simply (as in the opening post)

"This is a thread dedicated to sharing experiences on using the Glass.photo online (paid for) photo sharing platform..."

I think that as some people are trying out Glass, because of dissatisfaction with Flikr, so it's probably inevitable there will be some comparison with Flikr made, but it was more aimed (at least in my head) at learning to use Glass, and identify any limitations of the service. As well as what people liked about the service, of course.

I have very little experience of Flikr (and none of Instagram) so I will need to leave Donnie to explain what he was thinking about.

I was specifically talking about "explore" when referring to algorithmic.
 
Explore to me is Flickr's most annoying feature. Flickr themselves and many who post there portray it as an achievement, whereas in truth it's just a bloody bot!

Now, back to Glass - I've done some sampling as a viewer, and from the entries I looked at, it was easily possible, without signing in or anything, to download full-res images. Can this be turned off?

As far as I'm aware, only by turning off the anyone can view. It does seem that sort security is lacking. Hopefully they'll sort something out soonish.

I have just right clicked on a random image at Glass and used the right click to download an image. It downloads as an AVIF file .

The file is locked and is 1024 x 623.

I'm not sure what that means (being locked) in terms of what you do with it, but it seemed too easy to download.

I have of course deleted the two files I downloaded and emptied my trash, so they should be gone.

EDIT: I have now emailed Glass about this.

You can also download from Flickr, though you can set some restrictions in your settings.
In truth, as Glass says (shown in your earlier post), the only way to stop one of your images being misused is not to post it on the internet.
As those who produce copy-written material, whether word, illustration or music, have learned, with the advent of AI nothing is sacred even after efforts to legally secure.

As I have just discovered.

Within the photostream on flikr you can right click and download, but smaller (Jpegs) 640 x 360.

As with Glass, you don't appear to be able to use the right click on the single photo displays, as least not the one I tried.

The photo I downloaded has now been deleted, and removed from trash

That depends on your membership level and the settings chosen by the owner.
It is perfectly possible to download a hi-res photo from Flickr if the owner has not changed his settings. :)

I see. I assume this choice doesn't affect the resolution of photographs linked to from TP?

Maybe Glass just need to give the same option, or at least change the default to something smaller.

I see, so that 1024, which is the resolution that I downloaded from Glass, is what you would want for linking, and also forces it to be the same resolution for "casual" downloads.

I also see, as I've never tried it before, that right clicking one of your pictures above, let's me download a 1600 x 1067 resolution Jpeg.

I never realise how easy it was to grab pictures like this :-(

PS. I have obviously deleted your picture that I've just downloaded.

If by "download" you mean 'save image' then yes as you are saving the image posted on TP.
However you should not be able to download the photo from within Flickr, as my settings only allow me to download my photos.

Yes, I mean save image, but I had previously assumed that when you "linked" an image from Flikr, the image was still being hosted on Flikr, not actually downloaded into a TP owned space.
 
Thought I'd have a look at this...

first obstacle - it says I can have a 14 day free trial, but I can't see a way to sign up without giving them my bank details - is this correct or am I missing something (as usual) ?

Yes that's right, cancel within the 14 days and nothing is taken - for the first year at the discounted rate it's around £22, which is peanuts today!
Actually I think you can sign up without payment as a 'Viewer'.

I signed up as a viewer as I didn’t want to provide my bank/credit card details just for a test.

thats exactly what I was trying to do, but don't seem to be able to get past the enter the bank details screen.

oh well - no big deal - it's not as if I actually take any photographs anymore anyway.

and before anyone chips in with "it's very cheap" - well - maybe it is - but honestly, I don't trust my memory to cancel the membership before the 14 days is up, and £22 for a half hour look around before deciding it's not for me and binning the bookmark, is actually quite expensive on a hourly rate.

(After my last spell in hospital, and coming out to realise how much cash had come out of my bank for stuff i'd not used, I went on a bit of a "mission" to remove monthly payments that were unwanted, unused, or expensive for the value I gained - I was surprised at how much a month I actually clawed back - enough to mean that I could ease up on working overtime and still keep a roof over my head / food on the table for now... Yeah - joys of working for the NHS - at least I'm pretty much guaranteed a pay rise every year, because they have to keep putting it up in line with the national minimum wage!) - only 5 more years and I can draw my pension - hopefully work will let me keep my job till I fall down dead at my desk, as basically my retirement plan consists of a walk to the barn with a wobbly stool and a length of stout rope.)
 
It's working very well for me, I must admit.
Meaningful interactions with a few photographers and getting to see some interesting work.
I think I could live without Flickr! :oops: :$

They don’t make it obvious. Select create an account/ Skip at the end of the next page/ select continue on the continue without a free trial page/ enter required details on the next pages. No bank details required at least for me.

I will look at some of the postings for inspiration but I’m not keen on posting my own photos.

I have searched for some subjects but the search function is a bit hit and miss.

I had a reply to one of my questions to tech support: to ask if I am browsing on the web or from a phone. I never thought to mention this.

I'm on a Mac and just use the web but I have the App on my iPhone.
 
I just use the web for both. Way too many apps lol
 
I am increasingly using web rather than apps to reduce clutter on my PC (e.g. I use web version of slack rather than desktop apps etc). Increasingly, the functionality is near identical
 
I joined to have a look and see whether I liked it enough to subscribe.

My initial impression was that it possibly aiming at two markets;-

Those that seek a more mature version of Flickr (or 500px?) i.e. without the ego stroking of "likes", plus greater engagement and inspiration with and from other members, that is perhaps lacking on other sharing platforms :thinking:

And those perhaps seeking connections, who will make their images "members only viewable" to have serious interactions with like minded photographers. Also, maybe to see if (with the currently smallish membership?) the agencies join looking for 'talented' work from a fresher platform?

As I said, just my initial thoughts........so unsure whether I will maybe take a subscription for a year???

Edit ~ just checked and to get what I thought was the 'viewer' trial I had to enter my CC details (I never use my Bank Account for anything like that) I have 8 days left of then trial before they bill $29.99

About downloads generally - there's always the opportunity to take screenshots, which includes doing so for an image at full-screen, even where right-clicking is disabled.

Within Flickr, you can disable downloading as such for all resolutions. But with glass, with the instances that I tried, you can enlarge an image to full screen, then save that entire web page, which will include that large image at its native resolution - plus, strangely, all other images in that user's folio at lesser resolution. Along with the page code, of course ...
