Guys,

Very early stages of researching a studio in Glasgow. I am really unsure of the various areas, it needs to a be middle to upper income area. If you know Edinburgh, think Stockbridge, Morningside and Bruntsfield (where I am based).

I am not decided yet on shop front vs industrial unit, but once I have a list of nice areas, I can get started.

Any help appreciated.

Gary.

I am sorry that I can't offer any help with your query; but I just wanted to say "way to go", touch wood :p

Some of the best photography & photo-business skills I've come to learn from your threads

My husband used to live in Hyndland in the West End. It was really nice and full of doctors so quite decent earners. It was just off Great Western Road though so may not be a large enough area for your income bracket as I think it can be quite studenty around that area.

Someone may be able to correct me on that one though.

Try drumchapel, gorbals, kinning park and easterhouse! :D

Seriously try

bearsden, pollocksheilds, bothwell, milngavie, I think those are the most affluent,

shawlands, hyndland are still very respectable. and city centre obviously, they are trying to do up the city just immediately south of the clyde, so you might be shroud and buy there and wait for them to do it up. But it might end up like new gorbails, they made the mistake of building that over old gorbals, it should have been a similar geographical position that York is to New York!

I doubt you will find anywhere where there isn't already an established photographer Glasgow isn’t short of them.

Are you thinking of moving or setting up a chain of inspires studios! :D

Newton Mearns is where the big money's at. I'll come round and help you set up ;)

Edit Check out Parklands country club. They may have space available and it could be a good base. Just a suggestion

To Gary: you should see where the Venture studio is, I stumbled across it whilst taking a shortcut down a back street :shake:

I think it's been placed to be near the Merchant City, but the shop looks totally out of place and I doubt they get much, if. any passing trade.

Depending on how much you are budgeting for rent and rates I'd have a look at Silverburn. It won't be cheap, but it gets huge amounts of traffic in your target groups from the affluent areas on the south of the city.

The only suitable premises in the Mearns would really be The Avenue, but the rent/rates there are OTT, probably as much, if not more than Silverburn!

Up on Byres Road would be fairly good, plenty foot traffic, not a bad part of that particular city

There's more than just the Avenue as long as he's advertising. He also talked of a unit so PCC is not out of the question and there's unit's being built at Crookfur I beleive. There's shops on old Mearns Rd, Ayr Rd and Clarkston. I personally wouldn't look at shopping centres but Silverburn/ Braehead would be the best options here if the OP wants to go down that route.

I know there's more than just The Avenue, but most of the other shops in Crookfur/The Broom/Ayr Rd are newsagents and fast food outlets. The only advantage that I could see in being based in Newton Mearns is that it's full of footballers. Better still would be the shops next to Harry Fairbairn (and across from Mercedes) on Fenwick Rd, two good halo retailers and passing trade.

Spam valley ;) Everything's on credit

What's your target audience as that will probably make a fair difference in the area you choose.

I didn't like to say that, given that Dougie appears to hail from there

Mind you, the same can be said for most of the West End too, both areas attract the "fur coat and no knickers" brigade.

Yeh I'm a "Soo side boy" but not from the Mearns. The west end would be a good option but there's a heck of a lot of students who don't have much dosh to play with. Giffnock, Clarkston, Muirend, Netherlea, Orchard Park, Crookfur and the Mearns has got to be the area looked at IMHO.

I don't have a fur coat and I've had these knickers oan fur two years noo.;)

I would think that the West end would be your best bet.; and to be honest if it was me I would go for Great Western Road. I admit that it used to be a lot busier than it is now but you could get a decent place there for a fair price with the current climate. You would get a lot of passing trade due to the location of the road and I feel that the area will become busy again as the economy continues to recover. In my view it is one of the best times to buy in that area, quite a few empty units and I think you would struggle to find a bettter place for passing trade in the Glasgow area.

Just my 2p worth.

Thorntonhall is very well off but not much trade up there.

Giffnock is wealthy and Fenwick Road has good passing trade.

Clarkston; would have to be Busby Road at Clarkston Toll, but stay away from Bubsy itself - very different from Clarkson! lol

Newton Mearns; location could be tricky, perhaps the Ayr Road. The Avenue shopping mall may not be good, there's Nedsville across the road and the little ********s venture in there (excuse the pun) trying to see what they can steal or harrass.

West End; not sure to be honest, Jessops shut down there from lack of business and it's full of poor students. You could get a lot of students wanting you to loan them use of your studio though so certainly quite sociable.

The great thing about Glasgow is that if there's a nuclear attack it'll look exactly the same afterwards.:D:D
