Giving up photography the slow way! ** UPDATED **

Hi

What do people do when they have lost the urge to go out with their camera? I bought a 40D in october and since then I have taken just over 200 shots, I had a group studio session last week, turned up and just didn't even feel like it - in fact I took 3 pictures made an excuse and left :(

I loved my 350D and was looking for every excuse possible to get out, but since buying my 40D I have lost all enthusiasm for photography :(

Does anyone else ever go through these stages?

Oh yes! Thats what i love about it, it can be out down and picked back up again when the urge strikes!!
 
Think everybody does at various stages in their lives, seems odd that it would leave you right when you got the 40D though, do you not feel so comfortable using it ? or is it something else ?

Hope you get your camera mojo back :)
 
I think it's a lot to do with the weather and time of year. I've only really used my camera once since before Christmas. Not because I don't want to, just because the weather is horrible and I don't get much enjoyment from going out in the cold and rain. You'll get the urge back as soon enough mate :thumbs:
 
I have a relatively new 40d also... and have hardly used it.
I believe it IS the weather.... but also I cant seem to "see" any shots at the moment. My eye passes over what at other times I would notice as a great photo.

A state of mind I would say.

Never mind, Rob......... Im sure we will use the little devils soon!!
 
I did so much speedway stuff last season that I ended the year totally burnt out and fed up with the whole thing. It took me basically from mid October to the New Year to begin to get the buzz back. It will come back for you, of that I'm sure. Try going to a few interesting places without your camera - that should do it!

You wouldn't be the first person to seek out new goodies at a time when your passion has wandered.

It's totally normal and I think it happens to all of us at some point and it can be in the bleakness of winter or any other time. This is actually a really beautiful time of year but if you're not seeing the shots, then you're not seeing them.

Don't get stressed about it and don't try and push it, the desire will come back. It might take a week, it might take a year but it WILL come and when it does you will enjoy making images more than you have in a very long time.
 
I reckon you need to go back to your 350D.

I'll PM you my address so you can get rid of that niggling 40D ;)

:thumbsdown:same here..each weekend i say to myself ''gonna sling the gear in the car and go take pics'' but when i look out the window and see the weather i just end up staying home.

soon be spring then we will all feel better:)
 
Perhaps it's a 40D thing, I got mine the end of October and have taken about 50 shots with it, I am not overly bothered about it at the moment, I'm hoping that will change when the weather gets better and the bugs come back.
 
New places. I keep inspired by visiting as many new places as I can. It means there's always something I haven't seen before, something that needs capturing.
 
I havnt went out taking pictures for myself in ages. Since comming back from canada I have more or less only shot at a handfull of events which I did for no real reason other than I usually do.

Im putting it down to the weather, I like taking landscape shots and I dont particularily fancy going out in that sorta weather to stand around to take photos in crap light.
 
Every year (since starting photography in 2005), I have always put my camera down from about the middle of October and not picked it up again until March the next year. The reason? No Motorsport and therefore no interest for me :)

Very occasionally I will go out and shoot other things, but by and large Landscape, Birds, Nature and other genre's have no appeal to me.

I have to say I am getting a little itchy and really do want the season to start now.
 
I think I went through something akin to this at the end of last year. Very specifically, two things got me out of the doldrums:
1) The local TP meet we had in January at Whipsnade and getting to put faces to avatars was really fab, lots of great banter with other people on TPF :p
2) Getting to the Dorset coast a couple of weeks ago on my own and falling in love with landscape shots all over again including randomly bumping into and speaking to other togs.

There's no specific formula for anyone, but the 'find a tog buddy' has been one of the best ideas I have seen on this forum to help to motivate you to get out and shoot some.

Whatever works for you, hope you find it soon :thumbs:
 
cant believe that nobody has mention this. its quite simple really, get rid of that cannon and by a decent nikon, then you can learn what real photography is all about :P
 
Fair weather photographers! LOl.

Maybe you just need some inspiration, I often feel like this for months or years at a time about painting/drawing then all of a sudden something inspires me. I love the winter, spring and Autumn, so come summer I will probably feel like you do.
 
How about i buy a 350d and swap it for your 40d that way you will be happy!

hey , just looked at some of your work in your gallery...you should be really proud.....just look through your pics on your computer ...that may give you some well needed inspiration xxxx:thumbs:
 
Blame it on the weatherman :D

Seriously, the weather sucks right now, the last thing I want to do is take a walk in minus temperatures :( You'll get the passion back, promise :)

I was thinking that too.... but then even us Nikonites have off times too. I don't think I've even taken 200 pics on mine since last summer!
I'm itching to get out and do some landscape stuff but the weather is pants (and too cold) and I have no-one to go with :(
 
Well just to put a different slant on things, I have taken more pictures since I have had the 40D than in I don't know how many years prior to getting it - no good ones yet but I will do it one day!!
 
I think we all loss our tog mojo now and again. Just don't do anything daft like selling your kit. Don't force yourself to take photos just because you haven't for a while it will make it worse just sit back and your enthusiasm will come back.

I just put mine away in the cupboard for a few weeks and did other things I enjoy until I felt like going out togging again.
 
I dip in and out of photography, mainly because of the all the crap hours spent on the pc processing images when there is so much going on outside..but the main thing is as posted above. NEVER sell your gear, cos sure as eggs is eggs, the urge returns.
 
well the bestthing is to put the camera down for a while let u recharge ur creative energy and before u know it ull be reaching for ur camera again :)

This is a big factor really.Ive been doing it recently even went on the dreaded bus to take some pics of clipstone headstocks and went to leeds royal armory other week.Just think of places of intrest to you and get snapping.Its much harder to take good shots when you live in a town as small as mine ive pretty much milked it.You city goers should have no excuses :p
 
I'd say its partly the weather meaning we don't want to go out, the dark nights adding to the depression and seeing the same old haunts all the time. I tried to make an effort this weekend and only got a dozen shots.

I *really* need to get out to somewhere new and get some time in :)
 
Definitely the weather, it a well know fact certain tog species hibernate between October and March. Then in the spring/summer they're everywhere. :D
