Giving critique - when you really want to say... Sell your camera NOW :D

...

On a more serious note, how the Hell can you give any help to truly awful images?

More than once I've offered assistance at a camera club by saying something like...

Shot from a different angle
At a different exposure / focal point / aperture / shutter speed / composition
Of a different subject
On a different day
By a tog who has a clue
It might have been a decent shot !!!

Is there any accepted way of saying that - you are so bad at this you should just give up now and take up knitting or some such ???

I'm just looking for some shorthand way of saying this to peeps on here so they immediately resign from TP and go do something else other than photography - thoughts ???

Dave

PS - this may not be an entirely serious thread

Do you still have the box the camera came in? ;)

(You could go on to explain that they should put it back in there and return it from whence it came of course)

I think "terrible shot " should do it and explain why . I don't think any photographer could be that bad that they should give up , in my opnion 90% of photography can be learned .
Unlike artists / painters who are usually just born with a gift

Carry starter packs of knitting kits :D

Can I have one please :p

Don't give up your day job.

Of course we all learnt supper quickly how to take supper great pictures..... Not!

If you get to the stage where you are thinking this then best not say anything at all

Really, say nothing, it is that simple

Could always cop out and just say "I've left my reading glasses at home."

I used to get it in the neck for pointing out dust bunnies. Bad vibes aint worth the agro dude, IMVHO.

It's a great location; I can see it was a nice evening... Model is pretty. that sort of crap before you do eventually home in on everything that is truly awful and ghastly with that snapshot :p

or just stay away from those camera clubs or critique section here if you haven't got the guts to tell the honest truth. Chances are they are either looking for critique that will allow them to identify mistakes and will help to move one (I.e. wait until light is better) or will throw the toys from the pram and cry in the corner. You don't want the latter but will eventually get some.

Have you thought about getting a DSLR instead of using your phone?

"Do you have any other hobbies?"

Isn't it about time for the coffee break? ;)

Was there a nuclear explosion going on behind you at the time

It would be better if you left the lens cap on

I'm glad some of you realised it was a joke !!!

Maybe I should have added - No sensible replies required :D

Dave
LOL , yes mine was one of the few sensible replies, feel silly now, but it was the bit you said "on a more serious note" mislead me into thinking you were serious

"Lovely to see that you are letting your 2 year old loose with the camera again"

You realize the monkey owns the copyright?

I find it very difficult to offer critique on this forum for a number of reasons, firstly I have seen how much a "dog of a picture" can be improved with hours and hours of photo shop editing to the point of not being even close to the original, I have done it myself and not posted them because I consider them borderline fraud.

My favorite area used to be bird pictures, there is no way some feathers are that sharp from 30 meters away, even if the lens was made by some famous magic glass polisher and cost a zillion quid.

I generally only comment on the film and conventional section as that's where I focus my photography now and I know how little the really good guys in there adjust there pictures.

Slightly OT but I have to agree
there is no way some feathers are that sharp from 30 meters away,
There is not that much detail (in some cases) to the nakid eye at 30 cm ;)

Especially your eyes !
haha

Like everything in life I think one or two missed the small print :D

My only excuse is that my reading glasses have yet to be unpacked so I didn't see the small print!!!

Truly terrible shots just don't get commented on but where there's even one redeeming feature, I try to offer some constructive criticism (if I'm in the right mood!) rather than simply destroy someone's confidence.

Nothing wrong with my eyes :p
Bird feathers are just not that sharp, ( as some seem to think they are) speaking as someone who regularly fly's and handles birds of prey,
I think I know how a feather looks close up :p
