been pondering it over for a little while and decided to upgrade my tripod. sort of forced to anyway now as the ball on my manfrotto ballhead cracked when I was remounting the head to the legs. split right down the ball itself. rubbishness.
so, onwards and decided to go gitzo. after something light and good for up a mountain and travelling (used for landscapes). narrowed it down to series 2 4-section-leg types. not certain a 'travel 'pod' would cope with the 1ds/1d sized cameras - at least I've not read of anyone using such a setup, though please enlighten me if I'm way off...
anyone know the difference between the 2540 and 2541 tripods? I've found both but apart from age (the latter being newer) is there anything really significantly different?

I have the 2531 EX which has very minor differences from the 2530EX. The only one I can remember is that the 2531 EX has a screw through the plate that holds the tripod head which holds the latter firmly in place.

The 2531 EX is the 3 section version of the 2541EX (explorer). Not sure if you're looking at the explorer range or the mountaineer... but these minor difs may be the same in both.:)

hi thanks for that, yes it the mountineer version not the explorer one with the lever-arm thingy...and yes its hard to find anywhere that has differences (in specs) listed!

I agree I am sure they added a locking screw the baseplate to stop the head rotating.

Small thing to watch, the rubber feet have a habit of coming loose, so it is a good idea to apply some threadlock or PTFE tape to the threads to secure them.

I bet it is, as with many things from gitzo, though its not quite what i'm after
