Gitzo Ocean Traveler - Pre Use Review!

Hi all! And thanks a lot Gary for that image! I saw it first on Flickr, about 5 minutes after I was 99.999% certain I would get the GT1541T! Ahem. Thanks a bunch! :-/ Your awe-inspiring product shot should be used by Gitzo and they should send you a complimentary tripod methinks for adding at least one more customer to their Ocean Traveler base (me!)

Luckily, I can actually say that I will be using it in very wet and also cold climates in the future, so it should be worth it. The cost will be forgotten once it's in my possession, surely *fingers crossed*

Further, I do believe/agree that good gear makes the hobby/profession more fun and enjoyable, and as I am a sucker for perfect build-quality, which this tripod (legs) seems to be... I have tried to justify the extra cost by thinking I am getting a decent ball head for ultra-light hiking for the difference between this and the GT1541T (ok, a simplistic view, I know!), and then I just use my existing Novoflex MagicBall (which is also quite awesome) when I'm near the surf (with a car) :-) ...picking it up on Thursday.., can't wait! :-)

Welcome to TP :)

If you want a really nice ball head and like fine engineering, Acratech have just the thing. Cool design and beautifully made, very light http://www.bobrigby.com/acratech/gpballhead.html May be cheaper if you buy direct from the US.

The reason I mention it is because they have a new version with a modified (smaller) pan base specifically designed for Traveller style tripods, so that it folds up flush. It's so new they haven't put it on the website yet, but Bob Rigby had one at the Focus show a couple of weeks ago
