For many years my wife and I have booked our French holiday rentals through cottages4you and have been very happy with the service received from them, but sadly this year they have nothing available in the area we want and the period we want, Beaune/Dijon, early September. However, Gites de France do have a number of properties that fit the bill. We have never used this company and was wondering if anyone has used them and could offer any advice, good or bad?

Please PM if you prefer.

I used them about 30 years ago. Both excellent gites. Highly recommended from that time.

I may be wrong, but I think they are semi official, sort of like staying in forestry commission cabins. They are very well known either way and are a reputable organisation so if you find something you like I'd say go for it.

Many thanks guys for your replies.

Carl..... I had already viewed the sites in your links and had realised that they were a part of the same group as they all had the same properties for the same period and for the same price. Gites de France was the only company that had anything different, but having never used them, we were wondering how they operate, i,e, payment of security bond, euros, or sterling? As most of the properties are French owned and you book directly with them, one assumes that it must be in euros. Since we don't have a euro bank account, things could become a bit more difficult.

In the past when we have booked through cottages4you and had to pay a security deposit, it has been in sterling and the cheque returned after our stay, providing there was no damage.

We have used Gites de France every year for about 30 years. In all that time we have had one gite which was not quite up to expectations. Some of the gites can be booked via the local tourist information offices and so you can pay by credit card, for a small booking fee. Others you pay direct to the owners, I use TransferWise to transfer the money (that is worth another thread to explain but I find them efficient, good value and have had no problems) normally a deposit and then the balance nearer the holiday. The security deposit is normally paid in euros, in cash, direct to the owner when you arrive and is repaid in cash when you leave. We have never had any money deducted from the deposit, even when we have broken the odd plate!
We are off next week to Normandy to a gite in a little hamlet far from anywhere.

Many thanks Kev, that has explained a lot. Based on your valuable information we can go ahead and book our Gite. :ty:
