Has any one heard about this model: Giottos MT 8223-50 Carbon Fibre Tripod.
I can't find in their website and this one is on ..bay and not sure about it's details.

I was actually looking into MT 8240B for travel as my Redsnapper is not that light to go on a two week trip...

Cheers.;)

Yes it is a limited run by Giottos, hence the good price, and it looks a lot like some of its competitors. The only drawbacks are that you cannot reverse the legs as with the vitruvian and other light weight travel tripod and the column cannot be reversed.

Hi! Any more experiences of this one anyone please?

The centre column can in fact be reversed, I have one, and it seems good, light and cheap. Haven't given it a full heavy duty trial in strong winds yet though.

It comes with a reasonable lightweight 3 way head, just had a look and it doesn't seem possible to change it.

Still grat value for the price I think and it comes with a tripod bag also.

On one of the blog reviews I saw when scouring the net I read someone who said he changed the head to a Manfrotto ball, I believe it is a 3/4 thread or something like that?

Don't remember exactly. But my OCD wouldn't allow me to put a Manfrotto head on a Giottos tripod!

I'm loking at the thing now and I can't see how to take the head off. It's certainly not obvious like on my Manfrotto 055.

If i'm wrong on this I would be intreested to know.

Cheers

I bought the same one a couple of weeks ago. Great tripod, great price and very steady with D3100 and 18-200 mounted.

Can the head be changed? Can anyone confirm?

It doesn't look like they intend that you can detach the head from the column on this kit.

However I suspect that the smaller/thinner short centre column will fit (mtc201) and that would allow an alternative head to be fitted.

Oh wow! That would be cool :D

i can confirm 100% the head can be changed

it uses the same thread as manfrotto heads ( the bigger thread of the 2 ) and just unscrews off as normal

i got one at the beginning of november and there quite well made but there not for heavy telephoto lenses
they make an ideal light walkabout tripod that isn't too hard on the wallet

Will one of these be able to support a 5Dmkiii with 70-300L?

It can carry 3KG

Thanks. Comes in at around 2KG.

I really can't decide between one of these or a Redsnapper tripod. While the lightweight aspect is appealing I'm not certain, I haven't got any means of being able to see one.

Any suggestions on which to go for with a budget of around £100?

This one on eBay has some good reviews - very nearly got one myself despite almost never using tripod!

Edit: tracked down the review

I was looking at that yesterday but was put off by lack of warranty. You get 5 years with the Giottos.

I really can't decide between the Giottos MT 8223-50 or the one in the ebay link.

I also have my concerns, the same as Hope about the lack of warranty with the ebay option.

I decided to return my Giottos, it just felt too much like a budget tripod for my liking. Mainly the head more than anything.

Have ordered a 3LeggedThing instead, will update once it arrives ;)

A 3LeggedThing? The carbon fibre eBay one?

No the brand is called 3leggedthing, it's a British company. Their site is that name with .com on the end. I opted for the magnesium one.

I don't trust these eBay sellers for after sales.

I've just bought one of these and am very happy with it apart from the head, being used to a ball head.
I have tried to remove the head from the column and it won't come off short of gripping in a vice and mole grips I'd say (If then!).

Can i ask Cosmicma, how easy did you find it to change the head on yours? I'm wondering if the specs were changed part way thru the manufacturing run to a non-removable head or if i have a dud.

I have tried e-mailing giottos for information but have not recieved a reply as yet.

Looking like I'll have to get the MTC201.

Cheers, Paul.

you'd be surprised hpw many people have emailed me about this ( maybe not :) ) and i can assure you the head can be changed

i don't remember mine being that difficult to unscrew the original head and i certainly didn't use any tools, grips or vices but it is on there pretty tight
get someone to hold the center column while you turn the head anticlockwise
it is tight but it will come off

Thanks for the reply and especially the pictures. Most helpful. Mine is stuck fast and looking like a trip back to the shop or soft jaws in the vice. If I get a really good grip on the column, the head spins as I cant get enough pressure on the screw that stops the head spinning to lock it.

Cheers, Paul.

Edit; in the interests of science (not because I'm stubborn and wasn't going to be beaten by a piece of metal :-)) I got the tools out and had a fixing session.

So, my advice to anyone who wants to change the head on one of these is that if the head doesn't spin off easily it is because the studding holding the head on has been given a liberal dose of threadlock like mine was.

The stud unscrewed from the column first and I had to use gentle heat on the head and grips on the stud to remove it.
I now just need a new piece of stud to fit my ball head to, head and column unharmed:)

i must of got lucky mine came off with no tools
a bit late now but you should have used a couple of nuts tightened against each other and a spanner to extract the stud from the head
