Hi all, need some input on buying a tripod.
I have seen a giotto MTL3261B for £63.61 at warehouse express (much cheaper than elsewhere).
Since seeing this, I have noted a lot of favorable posts regarding the redsnapper tri 283 (£50).

The two are comparable for load weight and height.

Which should I go for??

(I mainly shoot wildlife, mostly birds with 100-400)

Just a couple of points to consider/check out:

1. The Redsnapper comes with a (good quality) bag. Quick google shows a bag for the Giotto to be around £20. Depends whether you want a bag or not.

2. Not sure about the Giotto, but the Redsnapper has integral spiked feet which are revealed by screwing up the rubber feet. Might be useful in the field shooting birds. I know spiked feet on some other tripods are an optional extra.

Well I bought the redsnapper for my macrophotography and was amazed a the quality you get for waht you pay. 100% thumsup from me for redsnapper

+1 for redsnapper, but sorry the bag is great, but useless because once you put a head on the tripod it no long fits!

Here are the significant differences IMO

The Redsnapper is twist lock, the Giotto is flip lock. I found twist lock to be slower than flip lock.

Something to consider, the redsnapper max height of 1600mm is a figure without the centre column extended. The giottos figure is the same but with the centre column extended - the redsnapper will be much more stabale at comparable heights.. The redsnapper also comes with a second (Short) centre column for the low down work.

The redsnapper bag is REALLY good.

Overall I found the redsnapper tripod to be a significant step above all the competition in it's price band. I had a Manfrotto 190 pro and while the frotto tripods are better build quality, it is only by a fraction. The redsnapper is the best value for money you can get in a tripod right now. If it were not for the speed/weight issue I would still have mine (Got a good deal on a CF tripod).

It nearly fits , one of the handles pokes out which makes it easier to get out of the bag :D

Actually, it is only the tall 3 way heads that no longer fit (Like the redsnapper one, for example)
My redsnapper fitted in the bag fine with my kirk ballhead fitted - and that is a fairly big ballhead.

Yep, I have the redsnapper ball head and it fits in the bag attached.

Another point is that you get the leg warmers included on the Redsnapper tripod but pay extra for them on most other brands.

thanks all for your replies, looks like redsnapper is the way to go...
