nice set of pics.

I like the first one, a very different point of view that works really well.
The second is good also, a bit like superman with his cape!

It's certainly been a while and as always things have been changing! I'm currently sporting a new m4/3rds camera which has been a joy to use, it's small enough to fit in my jacket pocket so it's accompanied me everytime I've left the house. This has led to a number of opportunities which I might have previously missed out on so I'm pleased as punch.

I feel comfortable now with exposure and i'm able to replicate the look i want 99% of the time.

What I want to look at next is the use of multiple exposures to get a wider dynamic range within an image - a mild form of HDR and improving my composition.

I also have a better handle on the processing side of things too and I'm preparing an order of prints to hang on my walls (very excited).

Here are a couple from yesterday:

I like the composition of the first flower but both of these look very soft, particularly the dandelion

I've been getting out and about quite a lot this past week as I've taken some time off work. Today I managed a quick trip to the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral with the wife.

I'm pretty chuffed with what I got in the space of 30 minutes.

Welcoming Arms

I like the geometry in this! It's interesting

Hi Joe there are points of sharpness on both but these are at f1.7 so it's a very shallow DOF.

what's the exif of the dandelion shot? I'm struggling to see the sharp point. I know 1.7 is shallow but it seem like the whole thing is soft? but if you weren't using a macro lens I wouldn't expect the greatest results from a subject this small. Most macro shots are taken at a larger aperture in order to retain sharpness across the whole subject

This was taken with a 20mm non macro lens @ f1.7

It was a difficult subject as the wind was blowing it. The problem was I focused on the middle of the flower which is dark and the petals branching out get more and more out of focus as you follow them to the tips.

It's the dandelion I was referring to as being soft all the way through, unless I got the name wrong :lol: whatever the second image is.

If you go to

http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

you can plug in your settings and work out what aperture you would have needed in order to get the thing in sharp focus.

If you were using a 4/3rd camera with a x2 crop at 20mm and the 2nd flower was 30cm away I would estimate the dandelion is about 4cm in width? (that's just a guess) which means an aperture of about 6.4 would have given a dof of 4.02 cm and probably would have been spot on.

Intersting read but the images at the start of the thread all have the Flickr image unavailable message. Shame we cant see the progression.

I was tempted to start a new personal thread for my latest images so as not to publicise just how much of a crack pot I've been when it comes to kit. However on reflection I thought this thread might be useful to others who might be following the same path I did and always looking for an excuse to buy a new camera or lens.

I'm going to go through all my old images too and try to update the links so people can see my progress (or lack of).

Anyway my goals have shiffted somewhat since I last posted on this thread. I'm no longer in the soul destroying job I had and I'm looking to spend more of my time doing things I enjoy, like photography.

Here are some of my latest images:

It had to happen at some point!

On Friday I was on my way home after a good walkabout session when I spotted a film crew in the street. I wondered over but kept a reasonable distance so I didn't get in their way. After a few minutes I decided to fire a few shots off to capture some of the action. At this point a member of the crew appraoched me and told me I couldn't take pictures here. I politely informed him that I was perefectly entitled to take pictures in a public place but he insisted that I needed a license from Liverpool City Council

"You may need a license to film but I don't need one to take pictures in a public space".

"But we have children on set".

From unlicensed photographer to p*** in just a few minutes

At this point I knew I had what I wanted anyway so didn't see much point causing a scene. I asked him what they were filming (for my metadata) and wished them luck.

You'd think that a BBC film crew would have a better idea of the law surrounding these things.
