gimp

It's similer-ish to an earlier version of photoshop, it's got a good reputation among it's users, as I understand it hasn't been updated much recently (I could be wrong) and I don't know iif it can handle raw files.
 
i tried it and found it VERY hard to understand

tried other and finally bought Elements 7

very easy to use with 3 levels of editing and lotsa help walk-throughs

You are. :) The latest stable release is 2.6.11 on October 4th. It's one of the GNU flagship products and is in continuous development.
 
You can get a RAW editor for gimp downloaded separately


and it's CR*P!

Gimp is fine once you get used to the quirkiness of the interface but if it's free you want then it is damn good. I use it sometimes for Jpg editing. Must admit I would rather spend the £59 and get PS Elements 9 from Amazon.....oooh wait, I just did!:D
 
I did prefer the interface on Paint.Net, I never really used GIMP for much.
 
I believe theres several different versions of "gimp" some with a more photoshop like interface (gimpshop?) what the connections with the original are I have no idea.
 
My Story - I wasted a whole year on GIMP, downloaded the RAW plug in called UFraw :thinking: :'(

1. wondered why the hell people shoot RAW as mine looked ****.
2. i carried on shooting JPEG, wasn't entirely happy with gimp editing (limited)
3. most people here use Photoshop
4. i bought Photoshop Elements 8 (only £40 ebay)
5. WOWSER WOWSER WOWSER, i started editing RAW -> the software actually works !
6, never looked back :p

Gimpshop is an independent spin-off from Gimp, intended to make Gimp more comfortable for Photoshop users. It's not an 'official' version of Gimp.
