Got NX2 and Elements 8 but not Photoshop - I saw a mention of an open source programme called Gimp, anyone know if this is a good alternative to PS or if it's a useable product ... it's free which is a plus!

I have Photoshop Elements (PSE) 6 and also Gimp. I now use gimp most of the time - it seems to do almost everything that PSE does but it's free. Some tasks are done differently in gimp versus PSE so it would be best to have a go at Gimp and see if you like it. If you don't like it, PSE isn't too expensive.

I use gimp for my editing. IMO it's feature set is more comparable to full photoshop than PSE ;).

GIMP is very good, but there's a steep learning curve to get anything like the best from it.

I believe Gimp (2.6>) is based on CS4 if that helps. There are plenty of online tutorials etc to help you along the way.

Obviously I use the Gimp too.

There is an alternate version called gimpshop that has been customised to look more like photoshop (I've not played with it though).

I use Gimp for most of my editing, can't fault it especially at the price!
