Bearing in mind the price difference! How would you compare Gimp and Photoshop? Can Gimp do most of what Photoshop can do? I have never used Gimp but it looks similar to PS as far as tools and layout and it's FREEEEEE

I'm sure most of you are thinking, 'Just download it and try it for yourself' but i hate downloading programmes just to try them out as it eventually clogs up the PC.

EDIT: I have PS 7 at the mo and looking at other programmes i think it's lacking.

As far as I can tell, Gimp has all the tools, a decent plugin architecture (although it's a lot more arcane) and full scripting capabilities as PS. The main drawback, GIMP only currently supports editing in 8 bit, whereas PS supports 16 bit. This can have a big impact on processing some types of images (I've only really noticed it for Astro where you have to stretch the histogram pretty hard). If you currently have nothing, then you can't really go wrong with Gimp. There will be a full 16 bit version along at some point.

I have only ever used gimp and never felt limited by it. Loads of tutorials online as well. It might be a bit uglier and less user friendly - but it gets it done.

There are just some functions that are not very good, sharpness for example has no slider for adjustment.

I have downloaded Gimp and i must say it's not bad at all. I have also just been told that there is a possibility of getting PS CS3 very cheap but not sure if that's going to happen for sure.

I really like the look of lightroom as i can do everything in one package (Including RAW) but the cost is just too much considering i already have Canon DPP, PS7 and now Gimp!

Their is definately a slider for sharpness

Well i have had the software and used it regularly for years. Anyone know where it is?? This will be SO embarrasing if it is there :shake: :lol::lol:

After looking about on the net and forums i think i will stick with PS7 as it does do everything i want plus i know it quite well now. I just need to set the sharpness in DPP properly 1st then all should be ok.

Photomatix Pro looks good though!!

...may I just ask if that this conversation is as I believe it is....that GIMP (freeware) is as good or better than CS3? I have never tried GIMP but do have CS3.

Can this really be true? Surely not?

Chris

Well it's written by the same people who give you a free OS that beats windows.
Saying that I personally can't get my head around GIMP which is a shame as it seems to have all the tools, I just can't get layers to work in the same way.

If you've used Photoshop then I think you'll find GIMP fairly impressive, considering it's free.

However I do prefer Photoshop as I find it easier to work with and think some of the functions are better.

But you have to compare £500 to £0. It is impressive

photoshop is the recognised industry standard

May now be getting CS3 today, fingers crossed!

Apologies, i was referring to PE7.

Phew i'm not going mad

Didn't manage to get CS3 so going for Elements 7 and keeping Gimp and Photoshop7.

Why not?

Also, why not try it for yourself? It is free!

There are certainly functions missing in GIMP - whether or not most people will actually miss them or not is a different matter.

I found it very difficult to move from PS to GIMP - knowing how to do stuff in PS and having to re-learn how to in GIMP was frustrating. Also, there are better PS tutorials IMO.

That said, GIMP is fine for most things.

Photoshop is like a £500 endless supply of bowls of warm tasty soup that is pleasent to look at and smooth when eaten.

Gimp is like a bowl of Cinnimon Greyhams, Lumpy, odd looking but quite sweet and does the job but not as nicely as the soup!

That sounds daft!

So what your saying is photoshop is Heinz and gimp is tesco blue and white label

In a nutshell yes

BMW - Proton
Sony - Sharp
The Ritz - Wimpy
My driving - The wifes driving!!!

Any more?

hey andy west, gimp instructions online section chapter 9, 1.4 should answer some of your sharpness issues. ive just started using gimp and this helped me.

England - America ;-)

Cheers

I am using Gimp a little more and it is very good.

Gimp is a very good development and I make use of it for what it does, however recently switching to using it instead of photoshop yes I do miss a few things about photoshop.

Basically one big thing is that I am used to photoshop and how it works, I am not so used to Gimp - specifically it's levels processing.

I think you need to make the break and use one or the other, if you don't have PS then start with Gimp and you will be well away as it will be all you know. I 'should' just use Gimp but some simple things can be done so much easier and nicer in PS.

is that post a reply to me?

if you miss your PS menu layout and verbiage, then Gimpshop may be your friend :D

Yes but you have to keep paying with PS, around every 18 months a new tasty warm expensive soup appears. Wayne

Gimpshop was a pretty poor performer - familiar layouts for PS users but the original Gimp performs much better, unfortunately not as good as PS did.
