Hey guys I am new to the forum and looking for help in improving my post processing skills in GIMP.

Obviously above photo eliminate shadow above belly by using correct lighting in shoot. But how would I remove this in GIMP?

I have tried to self educate and play with it but things like burn tool make it look worse. How would I remove the shadow any tips would be great

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers, chris

The young lady has a bump - that is always going to produce shadows. If you did manage to remove the shadow, it would look weird. Leave it alone.

The way to successfully use dodge and burn tools is to have a wide feather set so you do not produce a hard edge to the affected area, set the amount of dodge/burn to very little and patiently go over the area many times. Let go of the mouse button on a regular basis. This produces a series of minor dodge/burns rather than one major one. As a result, you can go into history and remove one, two or more minor dodge/burns if you have over done it instead of having to remove the one major attempt and then have to start again.

Thanks for the reply.

Fair enough just trying to learn what can and can't be done in post. Obviously want to try and get things right in camera rather than relying on post. I had everything ready and in place apart from shoot through umbrella hadn't turned up in time so speedlite was too bright. Also didn't realise how reflective the back drop was until taking shots. All learning curves lol

I feel I got composition right but require a flatter less shiny back drop and better lighting. feel like the image is slightly out of focus aswell.

The subject is my sister and made a good tester

Just looking to get things right from start to finish. In camera and post learning as much as I can every step of the way.

I've occasionally done complete shadow removal but it's very difficult to make it convincing. You'll probably get better results attempting to blend away the hard edge rather than remove the shadow or highlight completely. I'd start with the healing tool, using somewhere on the stomach as the source.

Curiously there seem to be 3 distinct shadows. I wonder what was going on there? Are they due to the room lights?

Yeah they are so poor lighting.

I knew not a great shoot but used to find limitations of what can/can't be done in gimp easily as when you first go on the program there are a lot of buttons lol
