I know some people don't get on with it or rate it or whatever but I'm sure there are plenty of folk who do use it and like it. me for one.

So what version are you running and what plug ins have you added that you rate?

I'm on 2.6.4 at the moment but trying to update to 2.6.11 as part of a "massive package" which includes pspi (for using PS plug ins) and HDR tone mapping, among other things. Struggling at the moment. link is here: http://jesusnjim.com/code/windows-mac/gimp-massive-package.html

anyone had any joy downloading and running this? it appears to be an ISO file?

Downloaded and running! Been at it a few weeks now, but prefer Adobe Photoshop Elements (now I have eventualy bought it!)
Gimp is OK, but I only ever seemed to be able to scratch the suface, found the UI difficult to get into.

I downloaded it the other week, not the big package.

The interface does seem more awkward to get around, however for my usage of layer masking and blending it does a fine job indeed.

So I am doing most of the work in Canon DPP, Noiseware community edition and then GIMP...I'm very happy with this zero cost setup

I should say I downloaded the GIMP exe so had no problems relating to ISO. I have used software to mount ISO's in the past but can't recall what software it was. It may have been this http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-magicdisc-overview.htm

It would be great to have a GIMP thread alive and kicking with tips an updates on it.

I don't do a huge amount of PP and run Linux, so it's GIMP for me, anyway. I've got the usual plugins from the Ubuntu repository with fx-foundry and g'mic added.
I have to agree it's not particularly easy to use and somewhat convoluted to achieve certain effects. However, a quick search often reveals some-one, some-where has written a plugin :)
I should probably buy 'GIMP 2.6 For Photographers', might save me some hours.
I tried to install 2.8 but it didn't go well. That was a few months ago, so I'll probably hang on until it's in the repositories as I'm quite happy with 2.6.10.

Theres several different versions of Gimp, Gimpshop etc what are the advantages/disadvantages of the different ones? and I have heard Gimp can be tricky to install in Windows, is that true?
Thanks Wayne

Hi Wayne

This is where I downloaded GIMP from http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html, and got that link (installer) from here http://www.gimp.org/windows/

It installs just like any other program, I think earlier versions were somewhat more complex.

If you know a little about Photoshop it will be a little easier to grasp than someone just starting out with image editing.

Its maybe not the best software, but for the effort put in by the developers its certainly worth look.

Wayne, I'd give gimpshop a miss, tbh. It's a hack to give a PS-looking front-end to gimp. Not much more than a 'skin'. Being Open Source, of course, hacks are encouraged though not all are useful.
Gimp does things differently to PS, though the basic usability is there: layers, masks, cloning etc.
Later versions of gimp have better support for things like gegl, colour management (though it's still lagging) and generally more usable plug-ins, I've found. Not sure about the Windows version but installing plug-ins in Linux isn't as simple as clicking 'yes', but I think there's a separate stand-alone plug-in installer for Windows? There's even a plug-in that'll import PS Brushes. If you're willing to give it a bash, the 2.6.xx versions are the current latest stable releases.
The initial three-window UI can be off-putting. When 2.8 is finally a RC (might even be now, I'm a bit behind!) it has the option of a single-window UI.
I can sort of say it's like the difference between Lotus Approach and Microsoft Access, if you get what I mean? Same job, different tools.
Sorry if that's a poor analogy, best I could come up with tonight :)
(and I've not used Windows more than occasionally for close to a decade)

I downloaded some brushes and a high pass filter. They came down as zip files (from memory:thinking::cuckoo:) extract them and copy them into the users\$username$\.gimp-2.6\ (brushes or filters directory)

I'm gonna use it until it starts to hold me back....which could be sometime:lol:

Another Linux type here! Apart from cropping, and scaling, I don't tend to do much in GIMP yet but, there's a few tricks I've read on here that I wouldn't mind trying when I get some time - things like using layers to blend two images at different exposures (say when exposing for the land in one, and sky in another).

DPP runs well under WINE so, you don't need to run Windows either natively or as a guest OS under VirtualBox to be able to use it. ;)

Yeah I just done that the other night.

Two layers, add Layer Mask and then pull the Blend Tool across the mask. Takes seconds to do.

Not used Linux for a while.....RedHat 6.2

Thanks Andy and Mike for the replies, I'm very tempted to give it a go just to see what it's like.

From what I understand 2.8 isn't available yet and the latest stable release is 2.6.11. I can see that it's not everyones cup of tea and it was quite a long learning curve, but to be honest after using it for about 18 months I'd struggle to use anything else. That said I am trying to figure out how to get pspi working so I can use PS plug ins with it.

Looking forward to the single screen that is coming with 2.8.
