Edit My Images
Yes
Hi guys,

I recently downloaded GIMP to allow me to edit my compact photo's and bring their standard up a wee bit.

I seem to be getting the hang of it mostly, it seems to work in a similar way to AutoCad which i used to use a lot with the interface and layers etc.

But, i'm struggling with a couple of things and was hoping that someone may be able to help me out.

Firstly, how do you create a border? I was wanting a black border around my photo's.

Secondly, Can you create a logo as a layer and save it as a template type thing to allow you to add it to every photo without having to create one each time. And if so, how would you go about this?

Many thanks

There's probably quite a lot of ways to do borders, one that comes to mind is:
- use the selection rectangle tool to highlight the picture you want in frame
- from edit menu, invert the selection
- from edit menu, fill with FG colour
Assuming you had black select as the foreground colour that should give you a black border.

Not too sure on second one, is that to watermark pics? You could open the image and use "paste as layer" onto the photo but that's not quite what you've asked for. I've seen some watermarking scripts but not tried any.

Re logo, this method seems to work. You can create a brush with, for example, your company logo or copyright info.

Check the location of your brushes folder by clicking Edit-->Preferences, then look under Folders on the left hand window. Expand that and click on Brushes - this will show you where gimp looks for its brushes. You can change that to another folder or leave it alone - just remember the folder's location as you need to save brushes into that folder.

Create your logo and save it:
1. File-->New. I used a size of 400x200 and clicked on Advanced Options, then selected a Transparent image. I'm not really sure what's the best size - you may need to experiment a bit.
2. Add any images or text to this logo file. I Just added some large text as a test.
3. File-->save and save it into your brushes folder (see above for its location) with a filetype of gih , eg MyLogo.gih and give it a useful description too.

Then refresh your brushes or restart gimp.

Open the picture that you want to add the logo to.

Then when you want to add your logo, click the brushes tool and then click on the brush that you created. You can decrease its opacity (perhaps to under 50% and it will look better. You can also change its scale to make it smaller/larger if you wish.

When you click on your picture your saved logo will appear.

Hope that helps!

This^
but you don't need to worry about size too much as you can just alter the scale when you use that "brush" to get different sizes. You can also get changes in hue, brightness etc by applying them to a different layer and also the level of opacity.
