I was going to write a load of guff to provoke thoughts but decided to just ask the question....

Gilmour or Waters ?
 
Gilmour, but I'd prefer both...

As in the prat that was going to bring down society (don't suppose he ever worked out he was only ever part of Malcolm McLaren's get rich quick scheme) but ended up advertising butter to it instead. Ho ho.

I think both were necessary, Waters was the dark side but Mr Gilmour was the better musician and singer.

Off topic but you're right. Punk was exciting at the time but it was such a short blip in time.

Punk was a good movement at the time but to be fair - looking back, the music itself was forgettable.

What it spawned however is another matter - NWOBHM is probably the most influential movement to date. That evolved into powderpuff rubbish before grunge brought it back.

Waters solo work and his current political reincarnations of what the 'The Wall' represents in this day and age are probably as 'anti establishment' as anything.

Gilmour though as others have said both is better, Waters alone is good but so depressing.

Re punk, it had to be a blip, you can only last so long before a total lack of talent shows through.

Re. Barrett, RIP brother, then it's no more than a couple of weeks ago I saw a documentary of the making of "Wish you were here".
Had of course heard of Barrett showing up during the last mixing sessions, but in this documentary I saw a photo of him there...

It was one of those goosebump, hair raising, cold chills down the spine moments and couldn't help weeping. It was a real and true shocker...
 
Gilmour,but agree with the Barret sentiments.

At the time I enjoyed the punk era,I was however around 16 years old and easily influenced,I have since grown up and realise now what shoite the 'music' really was. Of all the anti's and anarchists at the time,none are in the lime light now,unless of course they try and recapture their lost past by taking part in a reality show like 'I wish I was a celebrity,get me in there' .
 
Both admired, but Gilmour just pips past the post......On An Island is one of my favourite albums/CD's

When it comes down to it, neither is much without the other.

For creativity Waters, just edges it in both solo work and the Floyd. As too punk about as original as the Archies and Spice girls, get your designer ripped jeans here. :p Stackwaddy did it better and earlier. :exit:
 
Both are as good as each other, its when they`re together the magic really happens.

That reminds me - Clapton was the main Guitarist on Roger Waters The Pros And Cons of Hitch Hiking. know it's not as highly regarded as Amused to Death but I quite like it.
 
Gilmour does have one charge to answer to.

He invented Kate Bush.

You've just reminded me that, somewhere in the bowels of my garage, I've got a copy of that on vinyl. I quite like it as well, may have to revisit with the mp3 version.

As for the question in hand, firmly in the Waters camp.

One of my all time fav albums The Pros And Cons of Hitch Hiking,i even imported from Japan when it was unavailable on CD in this county :)
 
I've voted for Gilmour, though I've always felt that the combination was greater than the sum of its parts - as with Lennon and McCartney....
