Hi guys

Has anyone been?

I want to get a trip in before uni gets out of control...if it hasn't already that is!
Planning on going on my own, so it will be a hotel stay.

Anyways, what kind of lenses would/ do I need?

Kind regards

Sarah

Been there a few times I only live 40 miles so it's fairly local to me. I usually go midweek as it's a tad quieter.
I use a Sigma 300mm 2.8 as it's the longest lens I own, although I see people with 200mm.

Well worth a visit if your up that way, hope your panning is up to scratch as the birds are close and swoop up and down like crazy. :)

There is a Forestry Commission lodge a bit further up the road toward Aberystwyth that also has a kite feeding area, can't recall the name perhaps others may know.

There are quite a few farmhouse B&B along that stretch of road.

There are plenty on here who have been (in some cases) more than a dozen times.
You can use a variety of the hides, do some research before to see if one suits you more than another.
The canon lenses you have will do the trick just fine, consider a 1.4/2 extender to get even closer. Might be better to hire a 2.8 instead of your 300 f4.
As for staying plenty of places in Builth Wells, only 30 mins away at most.

The gateway hide (when you work out dates, phone the farm and book a space for the day/days you are going) is probably best with a 300mm lens, there are ones you dont have to book and are cheaper, but the window is bigger and allows a much easier panning technique, plus the numbers allowed in there are limited so you arent bashing elbows with people fighting for space !

Lots of Info here :) http://www.gigrin.co.uk/index.html

And places to stay here :) http://www.gigrin.co.uk/and/links.html

Hope that helps :)

I've been there a number of times. have a look here: http://www.rakm.co.uk/red_kite_01.htm

At present there is a black kite to be seen, but it's elusive: http://www.rakm.co.uk/black_kite_01.htm

If you go, a good vantage point is the second hide in from the left, you get a good view of the birds as they swoop. Also the majority of people go into the central hides, leaving this hide less crowded.
