gig shoot

Just want to say a big thank you to the people who have offered me the advice i was after. Perhaps it was my fault it kicked off as i used the word "official".
Unfortunately i only have the one body, so I'll be just using the nifty, 3 batteries two 4gb cards and a big smile as i intend to have fun doing it

Ignore some of the responses you've received here, ridiculous comments. As long as the organiser realises you are relatively new to this and is cool with it, go along and do the best you can.

As Carl has already posted, I wrote this guide a while ago which will hopefully help you out: Link

Your link is most helpful, thanks buddy

That's the attitude matey!

Just because you used the word official does not mean you can be spoken to like ***** so I feel it was not your fault.

Glad to see your still here and you are going to take a few snaps, let us know how you get on and have fun.

P.s nice new pic lol.

Tony.

dear god, is this talk photography 'the freindliest photography forum on the net'

It's definitely supposed to be although it does look like one or two seem to have forgotten :(

Just as a point if interest do not send me a pm calling titled prat then tell me I have attitude! You really should think that people offer you advice freely and that calling someone who may have been able to help you a prat is not the wisest of moves. If you did a search you would have found it. So I will say it to you publicly, use your head and try a search, and learn that having a go on a pm is very childish.

the "title prat" i was referring to myself, as in "made a prat of myself"
P>S point taken, i will use the search from now on for help, it was your attitude saying "how many time do i have to share this link" or similar that sounded not very polite.
ant there you go "again" calling someone you don't know, childish, i will not lower myself to public dummy throwing.

I am glad to hear I was not the only one to receive a Private Massage from the OP. Mine read

MEET
fancy one, you talk the talk, can you walk the walk?

I think he may be after a little free advice of shooting a gig:lol:

receive a Private Massage from the OP.

what you get up to in your free time is no concern of ours - consenting adults in the privacy of your own home etc

Getting involved won't help the situation

huh

its just a lil light banter sparked by awp picking up my writing lens not lens - so a) i'm already involved, and b) what situation ?

returning to the topic of the thread - if you are only taking the one lens you might find the nifty a bit restrictive being prime not zoom.

where abouts are you in the uk - if you are near exeter I'd be happy to lend you my old 300D as a second camera for the event

failing that how close will you be to the acts - If there's any chance of checking out the venue before the big night take it (for example could you go see your mates band at sound check or when they are setting up) - because if you are any distance away the nifty on its own isnt going to cut it for the frame filling shots and you might be better off using a short zoom like an 28-135 (or whatever you have handy)

I appreciate you offer, but I'm a long way away. My plan is, get there early, help carry in any gear they want help with, get to meet the acts, so they know if they see me pointing my lens at them from a close range, they'll be not so uncomfortable, not that I'll get in their way, just to familiarise myself to them. As you can tell I'm very new to tography, and just want to learn. Thank you

my suggestion in that case is to take a short zoom with you - in case it swiftly becomes apparent that the nifty isnt long enough. You can thread a lens pouch on your belt if you dont have pockets big enough.

How kind big soft moose!

And good luck pointblank.

I'm a teacher so I will let the grammar slide and not get involved!!! Lol!

Thanks guys, off out soon to practise in a pub which has a jamming session tonight, if i get any good uns I'll post them here for critque

only zoom i have is the kit lens, so on my cropped body there's not much difference. Thank you kindly.

fairplay, if you decide you're going to do this a lot you really need something a bit longer. When I had it I used to use my 28-135IS (it was only a f5.6 lens but the image stabilisation made up for that)

the 17-85 EFs might be a good option - and they arent too spendy second hand

well you asked for it

in general they are all very static - no sense of them rocking out

#1 isnt too bad , tho he looks like hes praying, plus you cut his hand off - stepping back and getting the whole guitar in shot would have improved it (this is where a zoom comes in handy)
#2 is he asleep ? and also lose the wires etc (moving about a foot to your right would have done that)

#3 potentially the best of the bunch - if not really gig photography - but the strap at the bottom of the page is distracting

#4 the speaker corner at top left is distracting, again moving a bit to the right would have sorted that

and #5 its an okay pic but crap background - you've got a wide apperture lens, use it to blur out the backgroud with bokeh (that ought to be less of an issue at the actual gig)

Thanks for giving me pointers, it's harder than i thought, especially with just a prime. Comments taken on board and appreciated
