Just wondering what this network is like at the moment ....not on any contract myself and have been on Orange payg for what seems like an eternity
I've heared good and bad things about giffgaff but their pricing seems hard to beat imo
Done the search thing here btw........ and I know the service can vary depending on where you live but an update would be appreciated

Been on itfor about 12 months, no problems so far!
And no, it cannot be beat for price. £5 goody bag a month does it for me.

Ive been on it since August and glad i did, "unlimited" internet (Its has a cap but i dont think anyone knows what it is from what ive read) and 250 mins for £12 a month.
Only problem I had was when the website was having problems and I couldnt top up for a day.

Mission control uses it and i have one for my spare phone, no major issues for either of us really. Tesco do some good sim only 30 day contract deals too click me

Been on it 9months and no complaints at all.

I like the fact you can run your account with a balance a bit like any other pay as you go, or convert part of the balance to a goodybag, effectively a 1-month contract. Then you can increase or decrease your goodybag at the end of the month or just revert to (payg) airtime balance.

You can also set a recurring goodybag, so if forgetful it will automatically keep you on it.

IMHO its such a flexible operation I'd never back to any of the others unless reception was poor. No contact with any sales pestering you, you choose what you want when you want, leave when you wish (but you won't ;) ) Ten outta Ten from me:thumbs:

I'm on it too and have been for about a year. Just had a phone stolen. The SIM blocking service was very fast - I raised an issue on the website and the SIM and phone were blocked. I had a reply within an hour.

The new SIM being sent out was a different story though - I took 21 days to get a replacement SIM out and that was after I had to contact them to get another sent out. I have had this SIM for 2 days and it is still not working.

This is, however, the first problem that I have had with them. Initially the set up was easy and I cut my own SIM to get a MicroSIM (they now come pre marked for simple cutting). The SIM worked fine throughout and using the settings I had excellent access to Internet and data services. Signal is per O2 so if you know anyone on Tesco or O2 you will have the same access as them - ask around. Signal for me is not the best (I was Orange before and their signal is superior) but it is reasonable for the area and I get 3G in most places.

The standard credit system give you free calls between Giffgaff users (so get your friends and family on it!) and you get £5 free credit for you and your friend if you order a SIM for them to use and they register it. You can buy "Goodybags" which offer a month worth of extras. I was using the £10 goodybag which used to give 250 any network minutes and unlimited texts and internet. This has recently changed and the £10 now gets 1Gig internet, 250 mins & unlim texts. This bag is the only one that allows tethering. The next cheapest is the £12 bag which offers what the old £10 bag used to with the unlimited data. I have stayed on the £10 bag and find that 250 minutes is plenty for me and I also get on fine with the 1Gig internet. I had £15 of credit when I signed up (£5 was free) and this lasted me about 9 months - you barely use credit when on goody bags. I was about £3 left when I added another £10 and still had over £8 when my phone got stolen.

I was given £6 of credit by way of compensation for the time it took for the replacement SIM to get to me.

All in all I have found them a perfectly acceptable network. The online only presence seems to work well and although I am having problems I am working through it with help from the online agents. They are not perfect - many on the forum complain bitterly about it but I have found it no worse than Orange but certainly much cheaper. I have to add that Orange were always perfectly good with me and I had no complaints with them either I just got fed up paying £30 a month for something I get from Giffgaff for around £10 a month.

There is no cap, however, data usage is monitored and any activity deemed to suggest that the data is not on a phone but over a computer (by tethering) or in an iPad/tablet (not allowed on goodybags) will result and a warning and cancellation of current goodybag and further infringement will result in a ban. Apparently how GG monitor is a bit of a secret but they maintain there are no hard and fast rules or limits, they look at "usage patterns".

I used to use them for a main phone but the service was too unreliable. Several days where you couldn't make calls or send texts for hours on end. Automatic goody bag purchase kept failing so you'd be left in no mans land with a half applied bag.

New £10 goody bag allows tethering but only 1gb of data.

Orange has been much worse. I joined months ago but it took until last week before I could even top up as their website is rubbish and the phone top up didn't work. Then the sim proved to be faulty. Only just got sorted. They're just a backup as I switched to three with a contract.

Been with them since August on initially a 12.50 3gb month gigabag data only deal. Setting up the automatic renewal was easy for me and it's always worked on time, I've just this month switch down to the 1GB version which rolls over at the end of the month or sooner if I use it up. So far no service outages or problems of any sort.

Almost three years for me as a PAYG customer rather than buying Goodybags. I've only spent a total of £30 on credit in all that time and had far more than that back in referrals. Current balance is around £17. I consider three years service at zero cost to be quite good value. :)

I think it depends on the area you are in, big cities should be ok but out in the sticks fair not so good. I left them three months ago, poor reception, dropped calls etc. I'm told they use the O2 network but I did a test with an O2 phone, great signal on the O2 but no signal on GG.

There is a download limit of 3Gb if they think you are tethering. If you hit it once you'll get a text and it seems very slow after that.

Now with Vod on the £6 pm deal that was available pre Christmas.

Try it and see how you get on.

The price can be beaten - "Icardmobile" http://www.icardmobile.co.uk/ - calls to landlines 5p min, mobiles 8p and sms 5p.... it's piggybacked on the Vodafone network, and works really well - ideal for someone who doesn't use their 'phone a lot - no monthly timebombing or demand to pay a monthly fee - I put a tenner on it at a time, which lasts around 6 months...........
