GF1 Hong Kong import via a friend.

Hi all,

There's a friend I've known for two years now, who's currently in Hong Kong. Now, I was thinking of getting a P&S, like a S90 to go with my D90. I'd disregarded micro 4/3s as they're so very expensive. He tells me however that he can get a GF1 for example with lens for £200. Looking at amazon, that's £300 cheaper, over 50% off!

Does asking him to get me one along with his seem a good idea? I trust him and everything, hell he's said I can pay him in cash when I get back! Do I assume correctly I'd be able to get my money back selling it on despite the fact that it'd be an import? Also where would he stand on import and such?

It'll be a fake m8, there's no way they can sell the camera that cheaply honestly.

Unless he declares it and pays the VAT then he would be guilty of smuggling and at risk of losing the camera, his money, his freedom, his clean record and of bending over a steel table, trousers around ankles, listening to the 'snap' of a rubber glove.

Ouch yes he is committing a crime but I don't think uk customs is quite that barbaric over importing fake camera's, unless of course the sd card has pictures of snow or exotic plants

Well before you shut the door on the idea, what are you actually risking?

OK, so the camera will have no warranty but other than that, it's a bit of a no brainer isn't it.

Your mate gets the camera, brings it back and if he arrives with a real, fully working GF1 you give him some cash. If customs did want to try and find his teeth from the wrong end, it's not going to make any difference to you.

I really doubt you can get them that cheap but if you can I would be very tempted. But generally if it sounds too good to be true...
