Getty strong-arm tactics are good for togs.

On another forum that I frequent (non-photographic), one of the regulars has just had a bill through from Getty images for £1900 for unauthorised use of 2 images on her website.

To cut a long story short, she is the second user of that forum to admit being caught by Getty in the last couple of years and even though they have pretty well laid out how to get around the financial problem, both are now strongly advising everybody to double check their websites etc. and to immediately take down any images for which they have no hard copy licensing or proof of ownership details.

It would be good to see this responsible (scared *hitless) attitude spread rapidly amongst the masses.

Well I'm not getty but I recently caught someone using 2 of my shots on facebook. I twice contacted the person but no reply so I reported the images to facebook and they were removed.

Now the person gets in touch telling they'd bad mouth me to everyone because I reported them. I explained that as they ignored my attempts to contact them they'd left me with little choice and then did a little bit of educational lecturing about the impact of their taking the images can have (they were from a 10k race).

I suggested they donate a few quid to the charity the race was for and then I'd allow the images to be re-instated. They agreed so everyone's happy and hopefully a bit wiser too

I work for quite a large web hosting company and we get two or three emails a month from places like Getty Images regarding users who are using images/media without permission. Its worrying the number of people that don't seem to care about doing it.
