Hi all,

I've recently got back from travelling and have moved back from my Sony RX100 to my previous Canon 40d. I was wondering if there are any firmware updates (hacked or official) that can really extract the best from the hardware? I have no interest in video with this DSLR

I've got some lovely lenses to use now as well

The 40d is a good camera as it is, noise is more apparent at iso 800+ then its modern day equivalents but a decent plug in such as noise ninja is a great puece if kit

Shoot RAW, don't whatever you do underexpose (used to leave mine set permanently on +0.5EV) and make sure you have some decent software to deal with the noise over 800ISO.

I loved my 40D and think they are a steal for the £200 ish they go for now.

At normal print sizes (not pixel peeping) will still give my 7D a run for it's money.

Thanks all, I thought the image quality was always excellent especially with a 70-200 f4L IS in from of it. Have started doing a lot more reading into the physics of photography rather then just using settings, which should help no end.

When I got my 70-200L I was in photography heaven :D

Just as well because it doesn't have it

Had two 40D's, my only complaint would be how they can blow a fuse or DC/DC board which then costs abou 150 quid to fix. Have also heard of some having a sticky shutter button, one of mine was on about 70k clicks and never suffered from it though.

If you hear a rattle it will be the pop up flash linkage, annoying sometimes but nothing to worry about and think it's even mentioned in the manual

No complaints with the picture taking abilities and used mine mainly with a 17-55mm which always gave nice sharp photos

Magic lantern does some funky stuff, but I don't think it'll reduce the noise issue - as previously stated - add 0.5+EV on everything, use RAW, and post post post! I loved my 40D - if it hadn't been nicked, I'd still have it now!
