Have an 8yo Samsung tablet - the owner died a few years ago and it has not powered on for ages, even if connected to power. No idea what caused the fault. I see 3 possible options to recover old pics (no backups I am aware of):

1 - Take apart and try to get the memory out but guessing its not the same / as easy as doing it on a laptop
2 - Connect via USB and access as a drive - but will there be permission issues
3 - Send off to a company and see what they can do but probably not cheap and no guarantee of success.

Anything I have missed or has anyone done similar.

Only an initial one re: powering up?

When you say, if I read it right, that it will not power up even when mains connected. Have you tried another (USB?) cord and/or another alternate power supply?

Yes, tried alternative and just dead

1. I think this will be a non-starter.
2. If it won't power up it's not going to be seen by another device.
3. Expensive, if possible.

Have you left it to attempt to charge for an extended period?
It may need time to get sufficient power in it to kick it into booting up - if an iPad is basically drained of power it will take a little while to charge up and be useable.
Another option might be to see if you can replace the battery and try charging up.

Fingers crossed :)

You could try and get hold of a battery for it and look online for a walkthrough to replace?

I'd encourage you to give up ;(

Unless you have access to the original Gmail account that was used on the tablet it's going to be very hard for anybody (possibly including forensic techs) to get into this machine.

Google implemented factory reset protection several years ago which means if you don't have the security details (PIN, fingerprint etc) and the means to enter them (working screen etc) then it's very hard to get access to the device. The traditional method would be factory reset using the magic buttons and then recover the data using recovery software. FRP stops this because if you factory reset a device without removing the security locks then it will only open if you answer an email at the original GMail address. And if you have access to that address the images may be backed up to Google and you don't need the tablet.

So even if you can power the screen up, without security info it's basically bricked.

There are ways into an Android machine that has no working screen but most of them rely on the user turning on developer options before it gets locked. And that's generally unlikely.

Hypnocat will tell you where you can recycle it.

Yes, this is spot on. I very rarely use my old iPad and when the battery is flat, even plugged into the mains it won't boot, it has to be left for an extended period plugged in before any attempt to start it.

My Samsung S2 failed like this, never did start again and was destroyed before disposing of.
On the other hand a much older Galaxy Tab S was left plugged in for a while and did fire up eventually.
Still using it plugged in to a DAC for music purposes.
Good luck getting it going
