I've been asked to speak at Wex's Photography Symposium on Sunday. I was initially astonished that they should think I might have anything of interest to say, especially given the class of the others who are taking part. I eventually said yes.. on the grounds that my journey from acrobatics to photography over the last 2 years could provide some useful insights into the learning process, with a few pretty pics and technical bits and bobs along the way, and was something that no-one else was going to talk about.

I know that there are many more skilled with lighting or post-processing than me but if I can initiate a stimulating discussion then I'll be happy.

Anyway, if you're going to be there then do say hello!

Don't know why you're astonished. You do good work, and know your subjects well. You're a good example of photographer/subject expert. That's always going to give good results. You know how to get the best from your subjects, and you shoot them well. I've always said this - being acknowledged in your field isn't always about your technical skills (not that there's anything wrong with yours) but making the images speak well about the subject - Do that and you'll just end up doing stuff that stands out from the rest. You'll not be the only one shooting dancers etc... in fact, I know you're not, but you're the only one I know who spends so much time doing it, and I bet you know quite a lot about the subjects you shoot now.- Just as Tim Flach probably knows more about horses than some vets as a result of doing Equus.

Enjoy the talk :)

Thank you - I'm astonished because I've really not been doing this all that long and I don't have to look far to find photographers with storytelling, or lighting, or processing skills which show me how much I have to learn. Onwards & upwards!

I'd not come across Tim Flach before so thanks for that. He's a bit good, isn't he?

just a bit, yes :)

They do realise that it's the TP Mega Meet Saturday and Sunday :bat:

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Cheers.

Mission complete; I thought it went really quite well. There was a fair bit of stimulating discussion, I had too much material - but didn't need to refer to my notes too much, I juggled in public for the first time in years and - to my slight surprise - people took rather a lot of notes.

Numbers were a bit low for all the speakers and as a complete unknown my talk probably had fewest attendees. Wex thought that their event and the TP meet would have a different demographic; I think Wex were hanging quite a lot on being associated with the Norwich open studios events but they don't seem to have managed to interest many non-photographer artists & art fans.
