Apparently Nikon will be releasing at some point soon, a new Full Frame optimised version of the 70 to 200 VR. Nano coating and all that nonsense...

Anyway, I am getting annoyed waiting, and I am wondering how much resale value I will get if I just buy the MK1 just now, and sell it when the new one is officially ready to ship?

Might have a look for a non VR 80 to 200, apparently its awesome too. (2nd hand).

Gary.

Gary, how much thought did you put into buying the rest of your kit?

What's changed?

Nothing, but I have only spent over £1K on a lens once, and trust me, I did not do it lightly!!!

I am considering going for this instead, but no idea how it performs on the D3:
AF-S VR NIKKOR 200mm f/2G IF-ED

F2 sounds awesome.

Seriously, it's a lovely piece of glass. Ironically I'll be in Edinburgh from tomorrow onwards and would ordinarily be more than happy to meet up and let you have go, but going by last year at the Fringe my schedule is so busy I couldn't commit to any time or place.

Lovely offer, but no tar! If I were to drop it, I don't think I could take the pain of having two D3's stuffed up my arse, sideways...

Do me a favour though, if you have a spare five min, mini review? :D Are you shooting with a D3?

It's expensive, but is it worth double the price of the 70 to 200vr?

G.

Gary, I shoot with a D300, as to whether it's worth it, well that all depends what you shoot. I find that in comedy clubs the extra speed is a god send. Added to that, with a 1.4x TC I've got a 280mm f/2.8, or a 2x TC a 400 f/4.

It's a beast though and really needs a monopod if shooting for any length of
time. Also, I did really miss having a 70/80-200 f/2.8 at the Yorkshire Show this year, it's such a good walkabout/portrait tele-zoom. As a result, I've bought the Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 as a stop gap until I can afford a 70-200 AF-S VR.

I'd recommend that you get the 70-200 AF-S first and don't bother waiting for the Mark II which may or may not arrive any time soon. Those who complain about it not being at its best on the D3 are within their rights to hold that opinion, but I'd be more than happy with the shots I've seen taken with that combination. Pixel peepers have alot to answer for IMVHO.

My bet is that you surrender and meet up - even if it is only to drool and get a very severe case of lens envy

Well next on my list is the 24 to 70 f2.8, but very quickly afterwards I will be looking for a low light telephoto. I wish I had understood the importance of low F numbers when I started this game!

The present 70-200 is nothing to be discarded. As a full-time D3 user I have no issues using it on a daily basis, be it equine, portrait or weddings.

With all the PP you do anyway - the vignetting will be lost!! :p

I am quite partial to a touch of vignetting, I like the "old" quality it brings to a shot, sometimes anyway.

It's not visible in every shot - and it really is only a very slight change...and you could easily build an action in photoshop to remove it. I think you're making excuses

Lee :D

So. For the festival and candids. 70 to 200 2.8 vs 24 to 70 2.8...(which is AMAZING on the D3 I am told)...

:suspect:

24-70 every time for that line of work (it is amazing too )

Don't hold your breath.

 where are you going to get one of those? More chance of getting a MKII - and it doesn't exist-yet ;)

The only people who are moaning about the current version are folks who don't actually take pictures and just stare at the corners at 200% looking for something to complain about!

I can't understand how people can get annoyed waiting for an unannounced vapourware product. Get annoyed when Nikon announces it and doesn't deliver on time - fine. But getting annoyed about waiting for a fantasy product seems a bit unproductive.

You have to be fair though, if spending a lot on a lens, for it to be soft everywhere outside the "cropped" sensor area, should raise a few eyebrows.

Perhaps it isn't as bad as being reported, but with that kind of money, why take the risk?

Surely the 70-200 is a full-frame lens and not a DX one?

I don't have an issue with mine. I havent even noticed any vignetting at all yet, but then I've not been looking for it. I'll try and post some samples at some point.

Well according to most reviews, and a big study by a british photographic outfit, its razor sharp to the point of where the cropped sensor would end, and then quality falls away dramatically.

All second hand knowledge, I have never used one. Makes sense though, why would Nikon optomise a lens for a full frame camera, when no full frame camera existed at release time?

Gary.
