Getting adequate sharpness posting on the web?

Once upon a time, it seemed that just a bit of extra sharpening was all I needed to do before posting an image here (using Photobucket as the host). Now, whether I use PB or Flickr, it seems that every image is soft, no matter how much sharpening I do. Is there something I'm missing? Any help will be appreciated.

What is your sharpening system? are you sharpening as a last step and are you sharpening before or after sizing? also what software are you using?

I typically sharpen as the final step at full size, and save that image. I then resize for the web (usually 1200 pixels longest side) and resharpen with an unsharp mask at about 75%..but that can vary depending on what the resized image looks like.

I upload to either host (Photobucket or Flickr) and then link to a post on this site.

Are you allowing PB or F to resize your images or alter them in any other way (like recompressing them)? If you are uploading files at 1200 pixels but displaying an 800 pixel version on web sites, for example, I assume you are letting the host site resize your images for you. If so you've lost control over your own image quality.

I use Picasaweb to host my images and I always size and sharpen exactly as I require prior to upload. I upload the files in full quality and they stay that way. If I want an 800 pixel file that is what I produce. If I want a 1024 pixel file then ditto. The host site does not alter them in any way. It just stores and serves them. The resulting image quality is all down to me and my skill, not the host site.

Tim: I'm not sure I can answer your questions. I'll have to take time this evening after work. I'm getting overwhelmed with all the different software kinds of things a person has to be familiar with.:bang::lol:

You don't have to answer them for my benefit. I'm raising them as questions you should ask yourself. The bottom line is - Is your hosting site screwing with your images in any way at all? If it is then perhaps that is why you are not seeing the sharpness you would wish for.

With Photobucket I resize image to 800 on the long edge then I do my sharpen and then I upload to Photobucket...I never have a problem.
