Getting a cheap external flash set up with a D40

Yes
I'm starting to do a few product shots and I think I'll need to get at least some kind of external flash set up.

I have done some reading but I'm still finding it confusing. I think I heard that it is difficult/expensive/impossible to get a wireless flash on a D40.

The set up needs to be relatively cheap too. I'm thinking a Jessops flash, but don't know what sort of cables/adapters I'd need.

If anyone could point me in the right direction?

Thanks
Phil.

well you can get ebay triggers and a manual flash - that will work with any camera with a hotshoe. You may be able to trigger your flashes with a pc cable, but I don't think the d40 has a port (not sure I'm a canon guy) but you could get hotshoe-pc adapters on the internet

The 30 quid jessops flash doesn't have manual control so would be on full power the whole time, the 100 quid one does have manual control as do most dedicated nikon guns (I think) so you pays your money and takes your choice with the flash.

I've got a jessops flash - you can fire it from your inbuilt flash or a hotshoe sync cable and its fully manual as well ;) ad it may well be for sale ;) at the right price of £40

Which Jessops flash is it, the 300 or 360 AFD? The latter is the manual one

Lol, love the senior moment thing! Nikon fit presumably?

right... so, using witchcraft right?

what if you dont want the internal flash to fire?

Then it won't set off the other flash... it is the light that does it.

You can use a card to reflect the light away from the subject ...
this should bounce of the ceiling and be picked up by any other flashes and fire them.

So if I got just the Jessops 360AFD I could use it wireless on its own?

No, you'd still need either an off-camera cord if you want to retain ttl (Ebay, about £20) or some other means of triggering the flash (manual only), such as a set of Cactus triggers (from £20, ebay) or Skyports/Pocket Wizards (from a whole lot more, Ebay/various retailers).

If you want to retain the ttl function you need to get a Nikon-dedicated flashgun, if you decide to go down the remote trigger route this doesn't matter, you can use a flash for any system, although Sony/Minolta fit ones are best avoided - Dogfish_magnet's flash is actually a Pentax-dedicated one (;)), but as he's using it off-camera that doesn't matter.
