My current camera is a sony w-80 , this will be my first DSLR camera.

I was wondering how much zoom is possible in the kit lens supplied Canon 18-55mm IS Lens

Also , if you have any other suggetions on what all accessories i should buy with it , like a strap , case etc.

LOL & is there some way i can get it for a cheaper price in India ?

I'm sorry, can't help you with the pricing issues...just surprised that somewhere might be dearer than here.

You might see the EF-S 18-55 referred to as a 3x zoom. In DSLR terms that simply means that the range from minimum to maximum is 3x (18x3=54...close enough!)
To give you an feel for what you might see I would say that the lens behaves like a 29-88mm would on a full frame 35mm camera. This would give you some portrait ability and reasonable landscapes...generally, a good starter lens. If you want to capture wildlife then it is a little too short and you should be thinking of a zoom that goes out to 200 or 300mm on the long end....this would be a minimum focal length without getting too close.
Set at 55mm, the lens will give you about 0.28x the subject size on the sensor at minimum focus distance but this can be increased easily by the addition of extension tubes...a 25mm tube will boost the magnification to 0.92x.....this is only useful for closeup shots as you won't be able to focus the lens more than a metre or so aay from you.

Hope that helps.....

Thanks bob, much greek there though for me , need to google around most of the terms you said :sheepish:
I wont be doing wildlife .....just yet , humans to start off with and i love potraits , specially closeups , i just love taking closeups of women , it makes for the most beautiful sight ever. No mountain, waterfall , nothing can measure up against female beauty for me , thats why i wanted some great closeups , will try on this ..as i am a beginner this probably might be the best lens to start off with before i move ahead.

Just a minor point,

The kit lens supplied in the UK is a 18-55mm but is NOT the IS version. I would think the IS version would add approx £200 onto the kit price?

The best way i could describe it, having gone from a compact to a 400d with the 18-55 lens, is it zooms from much wider than you are used to, up to 'normal' i.e. not zoomed at all on a compact camera.
So basically, imHo, you cant use the 18-55 to zoom 'in' to the scene at all, just zoom 'out'

If I were you, I'd wait a few weeks as it seems the 450D might be out next month.
