I'm sure we've all heard the saying "The 3 golden rules of photography are: 1)Get your work seen 2)Get your work seen 3)Get your work seen!!

But i have a dialema. I' ve ran into some money recently and with it i bought another camera and a laptop for my photo's/editing. I still have a fair bit left over, and i was thinking to myself.. i need to get my work seen. I payed 80 for a website for a year.. that was my first step. But now im stuck, i need some advise..

One of my ideas, is to sponsor my local football team for the new kit they want, i would get my web address all over there kit, and lot of ppl would see it, my name gets known.. but does my work get seen? I dont know..

Another idea was to hire out a comunity center, print all of my best photos large, frame them, and advertise to get people to come see it. A gallery for a night or 2.. also would my town be best for this, or should i go slightly larger scale? Advise would be great!

Any other ideas would be greatly appreaciated! my budged is around 800 pounds.

Advertising really needs to be focused and carefully planned. I would expect you to get more from a local show than advertising on the back of a football team strip. Arts and craft shows (the big ones) will draw large crowds. Wedding fairs. Local shopping centre (about £200 for a day but considerably cheaper for a week).

Depends on what you are trying to achieve also. What are you trying to sell? Your prints or your services? Weddings? Portraits? Landscapes? etc.

Word of mouth is a great way to get more business.

Community centre - the success of this would depend on your advertising to attract people....hence the local shopping centre would be a better bet. But then you need to have the confidence to approach people.

Could really do with knowing what you want to achieve in terms of your photography in order to offer better advice.

My aim, is to get myself know, and hopefuly sell a few prints and or servises.. but mainly prints.

As you said the succes of a local gallery type thing would depend on advertising, i have no doubt i could fill it, as i am already wildly know in my down and surrounding towns, espesialy by my age group, however, i want to appeal to older people ie 20+ year olds, as there the ones with the money, as blunt as that may sound.

so i think my main aim, is to get my work seen, sold and my name know, on a larger scale in my area.

That is why i thought football shirt adveritising would be good in 1 way, ie my name.. GregRycroft would be know as a photographer, however what i cant predict is weather that will lead to people knowing me for been a photographer, or knowing me for the work ive done. if that makes sense. what im trying to say is, they will see "GregRycroftPhotography.com" and alot of ppl will see this, and alot of ppl will know the name Greg Rycroft, and that im a tog, however i cant predict, how many of these people will then go to my site, buy prints, or my servises.

henz the dialema.

Greg,
I've just looked at your web site and your photography at a quick glance look A1. I would also consider a few other routes.

Send selections to photography magazines. You may get in the portfolio section, or if demonstrating a technique in a feature. You may get money you may get vouchers for this. Being published in a magazine is always a great tool for promotion as well as saying you've been published in the magazine. Lets face it, unless you end up in the how not to do it section, photo mags only go for technically good material. I've seen some names in photog mags that I first saw as a portfolio, now they're in features and loadsa other mags.

I've recently photographed my cousins 2yr old child withthe intention of sending pics to a mag. In return for their time, I spent 12.99 on a photo book with jessops online photo service (snap fish), she has shown it to others who are now paying me a reasonable fee for the same plus a couple of prints. I'm only trying to feel time during my summer vacation from Uni. At the moment I may change my career path.

Word and mouth seems to work for me.

Hi Greg,
as a post script, I would consider advertising in the football clubs magazine. They can take that home with them.

I'd agree, and perhaps take load of shots if they have a big or special match of the players in interesting/action shots. You may get a sale or 3 that way?

Rather than holding a gallery why not visit the cafe's/coffee shops/bars in your locality and ask them if you can display a few prints for free - obviously with your contact details and a price on - if they sell one you'll drop them a percentage - or look for new businesses and offer them some - would help if the businesses in question have a large amount of foot traffic. Try to pick an area that would suite your target audience - ie: If your images are arty then maybe the student area (though price for this) or indeed if your work is aimed at a more classical taste then maybe the areas where ladies lunch (more the term not a sexual discimination thing) anyway I sure you get where I am going with this.

I also loved the referal scheme that another poster mentioned elsewhere for portrait photography - maybe something along the lines of this also.
