Get rid of Photoshop?

This may seem like a wild idea, but what if I sold my (perfectly legal) copy of PS2? I find it very difficult to get to grips with and I suspect that something simpler would be more productive.

Could I get by with Canon DPP plus Elements and/or Lightroom 2?

And is there a market for (completely legal) 2nd hand PS2's?

Any thoughts?
 
You have a copy of Photoshop 2? I don't think there is a legal market because of the licensing terms.
 
Depends on whether the license is transferable I suppose.

Lightroom. Great program, lots of image adjustment controls, and the latest version has some nice new features. best download a copy and see what you think. Also is it worth the £200 price tag. For some it isn't.

Best bet. Adobe do 30 day trial of both PSE6 and LR2. Download copies and see what you think. For me there are still a couple of functions that are easier in Photoshop, so I wouldn't swop for elements. For me LR2 is better than DPP, but then I use it's cataloging facilities,as well as it's image adjustment properties
 
Sorry Pete, I thought you were asking if he had version 2, as in the old version 2. I think I remember version 2, waaay back on a Mac LCII we had at school...

Personally I wouldn't be without Photoshop, but if you sold it, I doubt the copyright Police would be banging on your door. I'm sure I've seen people selling legit copies of Windows, etc.
 
By copy I meant, factory copy, as in the product you buy on the shelves. I wasn't implying you were trying to sell a bootleg!!
 
if its a white box's OEM product - not transferable
if its full retail prodect - glossy box etc. then the license is transferable.

I haven't got the hang of layers yet. I need to work on it I guess. As a long term film user I'm pretty good at getting it right in camera. But layers are also available in Elements for that rainy day when I get to grips with them?

I've seen and heard good things about Lightroom along the lines of how it was designed for photographers rather than graphic artists - but is it a standalone programme? You don't need to plug it into Photoshop? Excuse my ignorance.

lightroom is a completly stand alone program, but personally id stick with CS2.
 
If you are looking for a similarly power product that is a lot easier to use, you could consider PaintShop Pro.
It's not Photoshop, but it comes pretty close and is a lot more intuitive.

I definitely would consider PSP. I had v7 I think before I bought into Photoshop, and it was pretty good then, and a damn sight easier to use. :)

I've been managing to make do with Elements, I'd rather spend the price difference on Glass :)
 
At the moment its not exactly a plan, more of a "what if?"

I was just wondering online if it would be a reasonable idea to sell my completely legal version of Photoshop CS2 and revert to simpler software such as Elements or PSP and/or Lightroom.

Photoshop is not exactly user-friendly, is it? Given that I probably use about 5% of its functionality I imagine I could get by with one of the alternatives.

Someone above mentioned Layers and I said that I hadn't got the hang of them yet, but that it would nice to have the option of using them one day when I got round to learning how to use them.

So thats about it really....:)
 
Hi Jerry

Layers are exactly what they say they are - layers of images. I will give you an example.

You have an image on the screen in front of you.

Look at the bottom of your screen and you should have a layers box and an entry that says background

Now click on the layers tab at the top and click on duplicate layer. A box will come up where you can give the new layer a name.

Do this twice so you have a background layer and say layer 1 and layer 2

Now look at the box in the bottom right hand corner and click on the eyes to the left of background and layer 1.

What will happen now is that any edits you do will only effect level 2

Lets imagine you have a photo that is in colour. Lets do a quick desaturate to make this level 2 black and white. There are much better ways of doing this but hold down you shift, control and then press U.

Now go back to the box in the right hand corner and press the white space to the left of level 1 and the eye reappears.

To the left of the screen you should have a tool bar showing, if not press window at the top of the screen and then click tools

Look for one that shows a rubber and click it. Alternatively just press the e button on your keypad. ( as an aside there are shortcuts for just about everything in PS)

Now hold down your left mose button and start scrolling over your photo and you should see the black and white dissapear and allow the colour below to show through.

There are so many things you can do in photoshop but I agree with you that at first it seems very user unfriendly but actually its the other way around. Once you break through the barrier it is so easy and other programs become the hard ones.

As to selling it I wonder what sort of price you would get for it?

It is fair to assume that CS4 will be out in the not too distant future so what you might might expect to get when selling a copy of CS2 needs to factored in as well.

Personally I would stay with Photoshop if I were you even if you use a tiny amount of the features; there is so much information on the Internet that if(when) you need to do more, you are sure to be able to seek out answers to any questions you might have. (Quite apart from the help you can get from the people here of course.) :D

I don't have photoshop and don't miss it at all. I do all my editing in Lightroom, I find that I can get the images I want and am happy with using that software so haven't felt the need to splash out on photoshop...
 
I love my PSE 6... I think that's hard enough for me:eek:
a couple more years and I'll have it cracked:lol::lol::lol:

I use PSE6 and I reckon another couple of years and I might just get the hang of layers :lol:

I have invested in 'Photoshop Elements 6 The Missing Manual' by Barbara Brundage and I find that a good help.
 
Another one here.

I understand layers and some of the things you can do - but I don't enjoy editing so I don't go near PS. I do realise the benefits of RAW so RAW processing is generally the limit of my editing. I've been using rawshooter and have now moved on to the Lightroom 2 beta. As I got an invite to the trial from a registered user my beta will keep working for some weeks yet. Once it runs out I will buy V2 when it is on sale as it does all I need. Edit in Lightroom - output to best quality jpeg for family viewing/ resizing for posting or uploading to print company - job done.
 
I've been playing with Lightroom V2 and have to say it's great. What would take you at least 2 layers in Photoshop can be done in a single stroke in the new version of Lightroom and is completely non destructive.

Essentially Lightroom now allows to to paint a mask that you can alter exposure, contrast, brightness etc through all without have to worry about layers. I find myself now using it to make small tweaks that I would have normally have had to go to Photoshop for.

I'd personally stick to Photoshop - keep at it since it's such an amazing piece of software. I only use Lightroom for organisation and quick adjustments.
 
I've been using paintshop pro X2 and really like it as you can customise the workspace and toolbars so you have the things you use most at your mousetips (as it were), But I've just chopped my 400D for a 40D and have discovered (shock, horror) that it does not support the raw format from the the 40D. So bear that in mind if you shoot raw.

You open the files in the Canon software that comes with the camera (DPP), then go File>Convert and Save.
 
Since I've started using Lightroom I hardly use CS2 at all now. Lightroom 2 looks to be even more powerful and I guess you could use GIMP for any other needs.
 
Just upgraded to A D300. Got the same prob CS2 doesn't open the RAW files or Lightroom v1. So having to use the jpeg version.

Not happy with this situation. :thumbsdown:
 
i have pse6 and have given it to my wife and my son all on different computers and all registered with adobe i think you can use it up to three times max thats just pse6 though dont know about cs

You might check out the Adobe DNG converter. Once converted to DNG they should open okay in CS2/LR1. This will give you the flexibility of using RAW once more.
