Get rid of Halloween and bring back Bob a Job!

Am I the only one who dislikes Halloween?

Maybe I'm just an old stick in the mud. I'm all for the kids having fun but I don't think any of them even know what trick or treat is really about.

Nope, you're not the only one.... we don't do Halloween here either.

i get out of it this year because of where we live but o have noticed that Halloween seems to have gone one allot long than the one day... all to commercial now i think

I've got the sweeties ready but I'm hoping there are no takers so I can eat all the chocolate!

We buy a few pumpkins but make soup from them rather than Jack-o-lanterns.

Pretty sure very few of the beggars with menaces have the faintest clue of the religious origin of the holiday (in the original sense of the word).

To be fair to the few we've had in the past, in the main they've been kids from the close we live in, accompanied by an older sibling or parent. The few teens we got a couple of years back who had made no attempt at a costume and who were simply on the blag got A small sweetie for their "trouble"!

Lights are out, doorbell disconnected, earphones on. Don't mind the younger kids with parents, but we get older yoofs that are quite threatening if you tell them to bog off!
Bob a Job was a real pain in the woggle when we did it (25 years in Scouting) had to accompany the lads (2 leaders to a group) and very little to show for it at the end. Best thing they ever did was stop it!

I enjoy Halloween but not the older teenagers. Just had a group of them at the door.. didn't get to it fast enough so they opened it themselves. It was promptly slammed back in their face!

Got a midnight paranormal tour down the vaults tonight that I'm very excited about though :D

That sounds better to me at least

Miserable old buggers!!

To be fair it's not the young ones it's some of the older teenagers that get my back up.

Nice selfie, Chris!

I took a group of kids out earlier and because we were out of the house took a bag of sweets to give out to other kids who were dressed up. I thought that was a good idea right up to the point Mrs Pooley pointed out I was walking up to random kids on the street offering them sweets and it didn't look right...

Got to love the modern world!

Just put up a picture of yourself, that would be far more scarey :p
I have one somewhere, with an afro and full make-up :p

LOL

First time I have been out with the kids, now my four year old is old enough, the look on her face was great, seeing her doing a little dance, muttering sweeties sweeties sweeties, she was very polite, trick or treat, thank you and have a nice evening

As for the older kids, some came to my door before we had left, my house perimeter alarm bongs inside, and they were were duly starting to mess about with the pumpkin, and then absolutely jumped out of their skin, as my brother stepped out of the shadows, dressed up as a monster as I opened the door with my mask on, the lads jumped, fell over, scrambled to get away to safety, all before they had even knocked on my door .... Sweet justice

Who cares about halloween, in 5 days we get pretty fireworks!!!

Actually, some are the 2nd this year. 2 lots of pretty fireworks!

Well, I've just had the battle of the Somme re-enacted out back of me :(
Tis a good job the birds are "bomb proof" or the would have gone into an early moult and looked like
plucked chickens in the morning :(

Do I care Halloween has a deep meaning? No

Does it matter? No

Did I have great fun dressing up with my wife and kids for a party on Saturday? Yes

Did I enjoy carving a pumpkin? Yes

Did my kids love trick or treating AND answering the door to other trick or treators? Yes

Those who have fun enjoy Halloween, those who sit at home on their own seem to hate it.

Why do people get their back up when someone else doesn't like something they do?

Bit of a sweeping statement, how can you tell who is "home alone" and who isn't?

For "us" its just another Americanism, designed to sell sweets and costumes.

I don't like like buttons either :D
So I won't click it, instead I'll

well having got a reasonable amount of sweets this year to give to all the trick or treaters, we had very few this year.

Whilst some may think great more sweeties for me, being a diabetic just means more will power is needed.

Working again this year, can't believe the cheeky little buggers will trick or treat a shop but they do! One little brat even said "Is that it? 2 years ago it was something like that" (gestures at wine bottle) " It better be crammed full of drugs and stuff!"

He's only 8. Made my night.

Any chance you could post about this? Haven't done the vaults tour - we don't get to Edinburgh very often - and I've heard very mixed reports about it. Thanks.

Never really did Halloween as a kid, it definitely wasn't as popular back in the 80s/early 90s. I think the most we'd do is "wear" an old sheet or bin bag and knock on the doors of our friends/neighbours.

For the last 4-5 years we've spent Halloween evening at my Brother's place. The general format is the kids (this year the age range was 2-14, about 12 kids in total) would all gather there around 16:00, have a Halloween themed tea party and at around 17:00 - 17:30 when there were enough adults home from work we take them out trick or treating.

The group tends to break up into 3 sections...... roughly speaking under 8 year olds, 8-11 and now my eldest niece is nearly 15 she tends to go off with her friends.

The rules are very simple, you're only allowed to knock on someone's door if they have some kind of Halloween decoration, you say please and you say thank you.

The kids have a ball, the people who are answering the door usually comment on the younger ones "Awwww.... aren't they cute"

Then after 30-60mins it's back to my Brother's place, the kids get as high as a kite on all the sweets they've just acquired, the adults usually then eat and have a drink or two.

Putting aside the "real" reasons for Halloween, for us it's a damn good excuse for a family get together :)

Thas how everyone does it in my hood.

For me Halloween is about the circle and calling to the spirits and of course donning my witch hat.
Some kids do knock, most do make the effort to dress up, but as said above, there is usually a "code" decoration outside means yes and no decoration means no.

:)

It was very good! I've not done the normal tours so don't know how they would differ to this halloween midnight special but the tour guide was amazing and it was very creepy! If you go in with an open mind and take everything said with a pinch of salt, it's very enjoyable. The tours are also on places like groupon very frequently (I think they might be right now actually.. unless it expired today). I know a lot about Edinburgh's history - and have had to turn down a job offer from them in the past! - and I very much enjoyed it :D Someone, when there was not a soul within reaching distance of me, touched my bum ;)

Thanks for posting this, and apologies for not responding sooner.

I know a few people who have taken the vaults tours, and their reactions were a bit mixed. Some enjoyed it, but my daughter and her friend weren't very impressed. They felt it relied a lot on creating an eerie atmosphere, and getting people into the right frame of mind with spooky stories, but they're both scientists and I don't think they got the idea that this is more for entertainment than anything else!

As I said, we don't get to Edinburgh very often - and I'm in another country at the moment - but I think we'll have to try this for ourselves. I know a fair amount about Edinburgh's past too, and I don't think it's any darker or more sinister than any other old city, but it's certainly interesting.

Personally, I love the Halloween period but I do not like trick or treaters. Probably stems from the fat I'm not especially keen on children, but that's another topic for another day.

If it was just kids off the street I might not mind so much, what narks me is when carloads park up and unload, knock every door on the street, then pile back in and move on. Not local folk, just going for knocking at as many doors as possible.

The kids have a ball, the people who are answering the door usually comment on the younger ones "Awwww.... aren't they cute"

That is exactly how it should be
