Get closer too Kingfishers

I trust Mr. Backshall had a valid reason for wanting to get so close to a Kingfisher and shine a lamp in its' face in the middle of the night, other than just "good TV"?
 
hmmmmm why can you get close at night......something along the lines of rabbit and light :shrug:
 
How unexpected! Maybe because the bird can't see where to fly to, it's safer to stay still rather than crash into something trying to escape.

As an aside, I do a bit of night-time shooting of rabbits from time to time, and they soon learn that a bright light is bad news, and they run like billyo!

Thankfully, nobody sane would take potshots at Kingfishers.
