Hi all,

I have recently found geocaching and I simply wondered who else on here takes part in this pastime?
I see JustDave stumbled accross it a while back. See here

For more info on geocaching see here.

I am in the process of selecting an appropriate GPS that matches requirements with budget. If you do do it, what GPS do you use?

Rob

no but I want to, just trying to find free data logging software for wm6, anyone know any?

Also how do you integrate the data and the pics? does lightroom do it?

I've not tried it yet but it's something that has caught my interest in the past. Maybe now warmer weather is on the way it'll persuade me to get out and give it a try.

I've got an ancient yellow Garmin eTrex which should be enough although it's so old there must be newer units that are better.

I think you may be mixing this up with geotagging that adds GPS data into the exif toshow where a picture was taken.

Hi Rob

Im still into geocaching it goes well with photography and its fun to find them

Cool! We are quite keen to get going and give it a whirl. We both love hikings, and it will mean it opens up routes we'll not have thought of before. I'll make sure I always take my camera too!

The garmin etrex keeps popping up in searches I do. Seems a nice bit of kit. I'm sure it will be more that adequate.

I am looking at the Garmin etrex legend c at the moment. I must admit though, not having used this type of GPS before I'm a little green in knowing what to look for!

give it a go it's realy good fun

Just need to pick a GPS now!

Will I need any other software for the GPS or will what it comes with do?

(I shall have my explorer series OS maps and a compass too, call me old fashioned, but I'll never go walking without them!!!!!!)

I've tried and kind of started but I'm yet to find anything. I must be trying the tricky geocaches because I keep going to the spots and not finding the prize!

i have found several cache's and so has paulc i have never used a gps as i found most of them to have easy hints, also you can get gps programme on some nokia phones certainly the n95 good luck:thumbs:

Very sensible, they don't run out of batteries either ;) When walking I rarely use the GPS, just keep it in the bag for emergencies.

I use my trusty Garmin eTrex, and by god it has found me lots of ship wrecks to getting me out of the pooh.

My boys are in a Expedition Leadership competition with SEA CADETS, and this is a great way to get them out learning good old fashion map and compass, plus keeps the family fit whilst having fun.

Plenty of deals on amazon for the Garmin eTrex , try and get a pack that comes complete with a PC & power cable, really good downloading your walks onto PC ;)

Cool, the one I am looking at comes with a PC cable.

I'm also an Explorer Scout Leader (14-18 age range, used to be called Venture Scouts) so when I have got my head around it I want to get the unit having a go too. Like you say, its a great way to get the map and compass work going, teaching that GPS is an aid and not the be all and end all of Navigation. It always makes me laugh all the horror stories you hear about Sat Nav's getting people stuck in quarries or in rivers because it directed them there. C'mon, common sense people!!! At least have a quick check before you leave!!!!

Thanks for all your thoughts on this peeps, We are deff going to be pursuing this one, look out for us in the log books!

I have Liverpool 08 geocoin that is presently in prague..it started in wales and has visited Ireland, Italy, Holland and and i have monitored its every step..just fascinating...having said all that i had another liverpool 08 coin lifted from stonehenge and has been kept by some unscrupulous geocacher....I love geocaching....i use my nokia n95 and a program called smartcom gps, it has never let me down.

can someone explain what it is exactly

Hi whitewash

Basically its a worldwide game of hide and seek, people hide containers (Caches) with items in them including trackable tags geocoins and more, when they hide them they take down the co-ordinates and post them on this site Clicky Linky To Geocaching.com, for other geocachers to find, if you look on the left you will see a menu with Hide and Seek, click it you can enter your postcode and change the mileage range to say 2 miles it will then tell you which are close to your given postcode, you can take items out of the caches but must put something in its place also you sign the log book then go back to geocaching.com and log your visit of the cache on the site

thanks dave, i understand it a bit better now thanks alot.

i might see if i can get the missus interested as a form of 'goal' when we go on walks, i dont possess a GPS but i think that my satnav allows lat/long input so it will do for now!

theres a few 'caches' close to us as well :)

Me too! Good fun and gets us out the house..the kids love it too!

Me! I use my iPhone as a GPS. My username on Geocaching.com is Gwespyr :)
