Genuine lens hoods seem to be going for about £30...youch!

Are the copys any different from the real one. Hardly a technical product. Any reccomendations.

You could buy mine for sale in classifieds :) genuine boxed and less than £30 :)

I've a copy of an ES-71II (for 50/1.4) and it is stiff as a board. Not sure I'd pay the extra for a real one though...unless there was one going cheap in the classifieds, of course.

The only difference is the price!

think one difference is the Canon ones have matt velvet on the inside the copy are shiny plastic.

Mine hasn't got shiny plastic inside! (JJC)

I bought a copy for my 55-250 IS, why on earth would you spend £30 for a piece of plastic when you could get the same item without Canon written on it for £5?

 :plusone: :agree:

Another vote for the copy if you need a hood. I have had both canon and copies in the past and there is no real difference.

Go for the copy mate! Save yourself a bit of wonga!

Nothing at all wrong with aftermarket ones, just make sure it's a decent one and they have a matt finish on the inside, the genuine Canon ones are flock lined.

From what I've seen of the copy ones the fit onto the lens can be a bit hit and miss. You may get one that fits perfectly of course. At least with the genuine article it's guaranteed to fit correctly.

I will agree that the Canon ones are an absolute rip off though, no way are they worth that kind of money, and if you think £30 is expensive... just have a look at the list price of hoods for some of the big telephoto primes!

i got a clone for the 17-85 kit, works a treat. If canon cant be arsed to supply one with the lens then im not going to spend an arm and a leg on one

I use after market hoods on my 17-85 and 70-300 both fit no problem when in use and reversed for storage. Used the money I saved towards some ND grads.
