It is now time for me to purchase yet another lens.

This time I want some thing I can use generally so a 20-70 would be spot on. For a bit of event photography to portraits etc. I also want one with a low F stop value for once but only a budget of up to £600.

What's peoples thoughts on

If you could stretch a bit more and if you could find one then the nikon 28-70mm (the beast) would ideally be the best choice.
But if not then I would go for this one Tamron 17-50mm 2.8.
As your on a crop body then lens would put you in the 20-70mm range and is tack sharp wide open,
I had one on my D90 and loved it. Then you could save the cash or pick up a fast prime lens for real low light stuff :)

Cheers

sigma fit - won't work on the D5000

Honestly, ironicall nailed it with the Tamron 17-50 2.8, you already have the 70-200 so with the change left over you can pick up the 35mm 1.8 prime. I have it and it's exactly as wonderful as everyone said it would be.
