Tonight there is the Gemenid meteor shower ,from early evening till dawn peaking around 2am with 100-150 meteors per hour . Look towards the north east for better veiws:thumbs:

Sods law states that it shall be cloudy here, will have a look later and see if its any clearer!

Thanks for the tip Dave. I'll take a look later I think it's clear here in my corner of Wales (just for a change)

Have just been out in the garden in Essex and saw several meteors. I was looking North. Its started to cloud over a bit now and its freeeezing sitting out there on my icy garden seat so I have come in. I dont have the right camera equipment or skill to get photos of them but thanks for telling us about them.

we had too much cloud cover and far too many street lights!

one day ill make the effort to take a walk on a clear night and try to watch some stars!

i have just been out and seen between 15 and 20. didnt get one on camera though !!! typical. All the ones I see were in the east. Thanks for the heads up.

Pleased you saw some Stew, it is too cloudy over here in the Fens to see anything. :( Hopefully will clear later or they will still be visible tomorrow night.

Just come in from setting up my gear (10-22 @ 10mm, f3.5, 20s exposures @ ISO1600). Skies here on the South Coast are totally clear - best view of the Milky Way for weeks. Saw 4 Geminids while setting up, 1 very faint, 2 reasonable and one bright b****r that zipped through the Plough (which is, or course, outside the field of view). Gonna have to keep popping out to clear dew/frost I think.

Spent ages setting up my stuff and the cloud rolled in  Wind as well so at least the frost has lifted. Perhaps tomorrow night?

Damn, was having a go and seen 1 shooting star before I set up and the clouds are rolling in from the north. East is clear but doesn't seem to be anything that way :bang:

Just seen two bright ones in Orion, so it may be worth pointing South if it's still clear over there.

I was up agauin at 5 this morning and they were still whizzing through the sky. I didnt manage to get any on my CF card. What am I doing wrong. They were within my frame. I was focused to infinity and on bulb setting. tried various F numbers and ISO right up to 1600. Please help me out as I would love to get some of these.

Well, I had a quick look through all 340 images I took last night. There's one with a meteor in it!

One thing I found was that my focal length changed during the sesssion. I started out at 10mm, with a good coverage of the sky. Later shots were at 12mm and, for the one success, later was at 14mm. All I can guess was that I moved the zoom while cleaning dew/frost off the lens. Very annoying as I'm sure I'd have caught more at the wider angle. Surprising the difference between 10mm and 14mm.

I might just go leave a camera with the shutter open for 20 minutes at a time in the garden :)

Cloudy....

Sent it your way! sorry

I might have an aeroplane and the police helicopter and that'll be about it I think.

Just woke up at 02:15 and looked outside to see clear skies. Saw two decent meteors while setting up my gear. I'll leave it out until it starts to get frost on the lens and see what I get.

Clouds started rolling in at 04:00 so I called it a day. A quick look on the camera's monitor showed at least two Geminids, one right on the horizon. But the other looks to be a real beauty! Time for sleep now, processing to be done later this morning.

Well that's more than I've had :( I've not even seen one, never mind got a shot of one. I might go to Wales if it's clear tonight.

saw 4 really big ones last night in about 15 minutes before the cloud rolled in from the north

Well, I've imported all the pics, now I've just got to step through them - all 220. But this one was very obvious and is obviously the only really good one.

If that's Cassiopeia, Frank, then that's a long way from the Geminids radiant. Is this a crop? What lens were you using?

It is, indeed, Cassiopeia. During a shower the meteors can be seen across the whole sky. If you follow their trails back then they'll all point toward the radiant, but that bit of the sky probably isn't the best place to aim your camera, because the meteors will be heading straight towards you, giving shorter trails. So I tend to point the lens at whichever bit of sky looks darkest.

It is a crop, here's the full size -

Taken with the Canon 10-22 @ 10mm, f3.5, ISO1600, 20s on a 7D. I would have tried the Tokina 11-16, but the Canon was already on the camera and I didn't fancy fiddling about at stupid-o'clock in the morning.

I got this one shooting through Ursa Major, you can see it's clearly come from Gemini radiant which is the two brighter stars in the top right of the picture (representing the two heads of the twins I think).
Here's the details:- F2.8 14mm iso500 15sec
Fair amount of noise correction on Lightroom and WB set to my liking (approx. tungsten setting).

Needs more work in levels to bring it out better but thats for a day when I got more time on my hands.

Just caught this one!

I saw an absolutely wonderful green fireball that lasted for at least a second, would have been a tremendous trail...but was JUST OUT OF FRAME!!! Nooooooooo.

Lots of them tonight but it's getting the clouds to stay out of the damn way!

Exciting, but tired now. :(

Didn't get a chance. Firstly, it was cloudy but also, I was absolutely cream bracketed so asleep! Glad someone got a decent shot.
