Gear snobbery

Only when I see someone with a point and shoot who claims its 12mp makes it better than my 1D....

Yes, every time I see someone with a P&S who insists on using the flash all the ********* time.

I'm getting there

It's amazing how when I started only six months ago I couldn't fathum the idea of spending £200 on one lens. If only I had been warned!!!

No I am not some people take better pics with their p and s than some people with a 1000 pound worth of gear

If by the question you mean: "Do I think that because I've got more / better gear than you [1] then I'm a better 'tog than you", I hope my honest answer to the question is "No".

But the fact that I've got more / better gear than you [1] does mean that I've got a better chance of getting a shot that you might not be able to get. For example because I've got a wider angle lens, or a more powerful flash gun.

But that doesn't make me a better photographer than you.

[1] I don't mean you, personally. I mean "you" as opposed to me.

Guilty as charged, I always want the most expensive even if I cant afford and cant use it properly. I am a snob from the point of view, I feel the more something costs, the better it must be.

Stupid really.

With regards to thinking I am better than others, not even remotely.

Gary.

No, but I suffer from 'gear envy' sometimes, but that's a whole different condition.

So when are you getting a Nikkor AI-s 800mm f5.6?

Or how about a Nikkor 1200-1700 f/4-5.6?

The nearest I've come to it was last week at the Fringe festival. There was an event photographer sitting on the ground taking shots (couldn't make out the camera) and I sat down next to him. He didn't pay any attention of me until I extented to 300mm which creeped past his right ear and into the corner of his eye and then subtle clickity click click of the rapid fire. I swear his eye was starting to come out of his ear to see what camera I was using without wanting me to notice. It's only a D1X but he would have known it wasn't a point and shoot though. Was amusing to me hehe

I dunno what I would do if a guy kneeled next to me and erected his tool in my eye!!!

Haha that's one of the most PC anwsers I think I've seen on here ;)

I'm the pretty much the opposite. I often feel embarrassed to take out any expensive gear in front of other photographers and often wish i could get by on something smaller and cheaper.

Id have thought its not what you have, its what you do with it that counts
Results speak louder than gear.

Yes, every time I see someone with a P&S who insists on using the flash all the ********* time.
Yeah did you see at the olympics all those people in the stands about half a mile from the athletes with their flashes going off like fireflies lmao

And yes I have good gear and proud of it.There is better-but not much.

There is nothing wrong with being good or having good stuff in life-those that shine inspire those around them to shine also. Its a famous saying and its so true-we shouldnt all be shy violets but impressive flourishing roses.

+1 ^^

If you are given a formula one car you will not be able to win the gram prix

If you give a painter a pencil he could still sketch you a great picture.

that translates to:

Just because you have the most expensive gear doesnt mean you can make a masterpiece

If a truly great photographer was handed an old point and shoot camera, theyd still be able to construct a visibly pleasing result (all the points that make it good would still be there, composition, light, lines etc) - If the basic artistic guidelines are followed 'noise' and 'pixels' wont matter

Then why in gods name do we all have expensive cameras and pro's would be earning thousands from a nikon coolpix-what you have said is relative.

Gear snobbery is not about if your a good photographer-its about if you are willing to pay out for the best in a hope of becoming a great photographer.

If you took a shot with your average point and shoot even an expensive one-you wouldnt get true dof because its all blooming electronics doing the stuff. A real camera is actually harder to create a good picture with-as you kind of said anyway.

So its swings and roundabouts really. Gear snobbery is about quality -end of story imho.

He said doesn't mean you can make a masterpiece. He didn't mean that you don't need expensive gear. A good photographer will be able to take a good photo with any camera.
