Sorry All. I had a look on the forums for a thread with reviews on good/bad gear insurers... sorry if theres one out there but I couldn't see it

Cheapest is your own house/home insurance just add camera gear to it

Home insurance can usually be extended to cover personal possessions away from the home. You just need to watch out for the single article limits. Hired gear may be covered too. It all depends on the wording and if the wording states that it will also cover goods that are your legal responsibility, if the hire contract makes them you legally responsible, you should be OK. Best advice is to speak to your home insurers and tell them what you want to cover.

I'd also second going with your home insurance, although I think if you do any paid work they may not cover you as you would be treated as a professional. As suggested contact them to see what they say.

There arn't any i dont think as theres not that many claims to compare who was best........ and so far every poster has answered a different question than the one you asked..

Towergate or photoguard?

If I recall properly, I had one with photoguard, and claimed. The paid to have it fixed (I had to pay the excess).

Worth just emailing or phoning them to get a quote.
Usually stolen, accident, home and abroad covers are included at different prices and payouts.

Cheers Buddy - will look in to them

Most people put camera gear on their home contents insurance. That's why there aren't many specialist photo insurance options.

When hiring, the hirer will offer insurance cover - it may already be included or be non-optional.

Edit: home contents usually only covers gear that you personally own.

He asked two questions: 'Who are people using? any recommendation ?' and most of the responses have answered either one or both of them.

I use my household insurance with Direct Line.

not sure that would cover it if i was abroad though mate

Household insurance will cover your equipment if you're abroad. Just check you don't breach any single article limits and, if you do, arrange for the item(s) in question to be 'specified'.

it may well be because I have answered another post by Jason, or because I spotted his small and subtle logo in his footer and checked but it is important and relevant that he has a website and is advertising paid services for his photography.

With this in mind the recommendation to use household insurance is not a good one - because almost without exception it excludes professional use / business use as "taxboy" mentioned. You would almost certainly only find this out if you claimed but insurers will look to minimise their losses and will use the evidence of a website todo so. Specialist requirements like hiring in kit are also most likely to be only in "pro" insurance.

You'll also in many cases get 3rd party liability (3PL) included, and an option for reasonably priced professional indemnity (PI) both of which are very important (3PL) and important of shooting events where you might fail to deliver and require insurance to cover a reshoot (PI).

I started with Towergate who were good but didn't have good PI at the time, went via Photoshield (who went AWOL), moved to Aaduki, and have now been with Cliik for 3 years and with whom I am very happy with. Cliik are also the only company I have ever claimed through - and it was swift, professional and painless. So they would be my recommendation.

thanks people for all your input... keep it coming - hopefully others will find this thread useful too..

Thanks again

J

I use Glover & Howe, but I've never had cause to claim.
