GB at the Olympics !

Have to say was up at 1am this morning watching this amazing effort by all gb team.

I've been completely drawn in to the whole thing and my house is looking decidedly dusty as a consequence:D:D

I think they all deserve a medal for the sheer guts and determination!

When you think of the size of the nation we have to pull our athletes from compared to China & USA who are just above us.... we are doing amazingly!

GREAT Britain!!! :woot:

:woot: Yep, I've been shouting at the TV a few times especially yesterday when our girls just missed out on the rowing gold to China - but great stuff. Loving the cycling too

Well done GB

always good shouting at a TV

Was laughing before, usa think they're winning the medals table.

They don't know that a gold is worth a lot more than a bronze.

I don't think the medals tables accurately reflect our prowess as a sporting nation. The reason we've got so many is that we've been very clever with funding. Track cycling being a multidisciplin even has a lot of potential to get a big medal haul. A massive amount of lottery funding was allotted to this which resulted in very good facilities in Manchester where the whole team is based. This has worked wonders for our place in the medals table but without this kind of selective targeting of sports we wouldn't be anywhere near as high.

Indeed. In fact we've been behind other countries in sporting prowess for many years because they have always put the funding into sports. Look at how the Americans have always funded sports in high schools and colleges, it's no wonder they have dominated athletics for so many years. The Jamaicans are starting to take over now, but that's also down to the Americans as they did their apprenticeships via the American education system.

A couple of years Sport England commissioned a survey to find out how Britain stands as a sporting nation. That survey put us third in the world, they took into account 60 different sports, but they then looked at sports on shown UK TV we dropped a long way down the list.

There is more to sport than Football and completion against the Aussies, we just don't normally get to see or read about it.

We are a top nation, it just that Beckham/Rooney metatarsals get a hundred times more coverage than some Brit win a world title in any other sport.
