so on the decking in the garden I have a gazebo frame (metal).

Very similar to this thing;

Problem now is, because there is no central support from the middle of the cross bar to the roof and with all the recent rain, the plastic brackets broke at the center of the cross bar. I fixed it on one side but then it did it again on another, so its a bit of a sorry state but the Mrs wants to rescue the thing and me fix it.

I was thinking of cutting some ply to each of the 4 segments of the roof, attached with industrial cable ties and then nail the old canvas roof to it and put a vent hole in the top to help with the wind.

my plan B would be to cut my losses and buy a new one but I would like it all year round...
 
How long have you had it?

Might be that the plastic has got brittle with age ..... maybe you could get new connectors?

...... or it may just be poor design which you are never going to win at!

the plastic is fine, was fine haha, it just bent and gave under the strain of holding the weight of the water in the canopy.

on the side I repaired, I removed the plastic brackets and drilled and bolted a piece of metal across. I did that because I had the metal already lying around so it was a quick fix.

There is an element of pride and willingness to fix it.... but...
 
I used to put some slot holes in the canopy so that the rain didn't accumulate, instead it just ran down the sides.

It does but if you make the slot close to the rim edge then the water runs down the poles instead of dripping on your head. TBH - they can be so cheap now it's probably not worth the hassle
 
How about zip tieing some bamboo (or brommhandle or metal pole - depends how strong in needs to be) across the break?

I've mended some plastic plant staging like that. It probably won't fold again.

fixing the break isnt a problem but i know it will happen again when it rains which is why i thought of adding ply to act on the roof

Would this not add too much weight for the side supports / legs / make it very difficult to move ?

I'd be tempted to replicate what you did on the other side you fixed and that should hold up ?

Then I have no idea what you are trying to do :). Maybe pictures would help?

Couldn't you just take it down when it rains?
 
I second the idea of bamboo supports. That stuff is strong.
There's a reason the Chinese still use it very successfully as scaffolding. :-)
