GaryPlumbridge's Photo52, part 17, Tropical added

I skipped week 11 (knowledge) at the time because I couldn't think of anything worthwhile, but I've come back to it and filled in that gap.

So here it is:

11 - Knowledge by ConicalFlask, on Flickr

Backstory:
A belated entry for the Knowledge theme. Featuring the marble chute hardware from a module that undergraduates in Computer Science at The University of York are required to study.

The students have to apply their knowledge of real-time systems and software design to enable the hardware to sort glass and metal balls correctly. The marble chute is deliberately awkward to use with only two sensors in different positions, and this means it can be quite a frustrating experience for the students.

(No, that person isn't a student, or me :))

C&C always welcome, the meaner the better. There's a lot to criticise this week :D

Hi, Gary, I wonder what your empty would look like if it was all in focus?

Being new to this I'm not sure if it could be done in one photograph or not?

I've taken photographs of a leaflet before and had to take multiple photographs and merge them in photoshop.

It's like one of them optical issusions where if you look hard enough the bottom becomes the top, if you know what I mean??

On your knowledge, I've gotta ask but who is that person??

I'd like to see all the chute in the photograph and wonder if you could have used a slower shutter speed to get a bit of motion blur in the balls? Although you have managed to get the lower ball mid drop...

Cheers.

Hi Posiview, thanks for the lightening quick reply!

It would be practically impossible to get this photo (empty) with everything in focus using a normal lens. The aperture would have to be vanishingly small. On micro four thirds (the kind of lenses I use) the depth of field is twice as large as on full frame for a given aperture, so this photo already has f/44 equiv depth of field on a full frame camera. (and the edges are still wildly out of focus). I think you'd need a pinhole 'lens' if you wanted everything sharp as a perfect pinhole would have infinite depth of field. I might have a go at this :)

Yeah, I wasn't really on the ball when I took 11. The framing is off and motion blur would have been lovely. This was the slowest shutter possible without overexposing the photo because of the huge aperture. I didn't even think of this at the time but it would have been a good excuse to try using an ND filter.

Thanks again for the comments.

Hi Gary

like your shot for Empty , B+W works well

Love your shot for Knowledge ,Uni sounds like hard work

Hiya Gary,

OMG I can't believe it, I have totally missed your project, so I do apologise.

I've had a quick scan of your weeks and wow you have some fantastic shots for the themes.

My fav has to be your 'open' shot, that is just fantastic

Well done on a great job so far and now that I have your thread tagged I shouldn't miss it again.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for the really encouraging comments! I've been away on honeymoon and work for a few weeks and have (apparently) fallen behind. However, I do have most of the photos ready but haven't posted them yet.

Here's my go for week 14 Object:

14 - Object by ConicalFlask, on Flickr

I thought it'd be fun to have a jarring interpretation of the theme without being obviously hateful. Something about their silly little faces makes me sad to call these chicks objects. I wonder what they discuss at their town meeting?

See you tomorrow, hopefully.

Hiya Gary,

Glad to see you back with us, and I reckon congrats are in order on your marriage .... you kept that one quiet. Hope you have had a fab time and all the best.

Have to say I like the little chicks for your Object week.

Look forward to seeing the rest of your update.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks Dawn! I had no idea that other TPers were awake at this time of day.

Except the night owls :D

Some of us have to keep things going

In my case it is a matter of work on my photography every opportunity I get :D

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi, Gary, congratulations on your recent marriage.

Those chick are strangly mesmorising and can't..stop...staring....at....them....

:gag:

Nice bright and cheerful photograph.

Thanks Tina and Andy, I do appreciate the feedback.

Today's submission is a bit weak photographically, but it seemed too fun to miss.

Week 15: Wrong:

15 - Wrong by ConicalFlask, on Flickr
Catrock had an accident. I'm not sure he knows what he did wrong.

Hope to see you all again tomorrow!

Hi again!

Thanks Andy, that's quite a suggestion! I'll try to remember this for a future dirty photo. :D

Onto today's submission, Paradox and the reshoot:

Week 16: Paradox:

16 - Paradox by ConicalFlask, on Flickr

A confusing picture for a confusing theme. A night sky even though it was shot in bright daylight, with chaotic but structured detail; messy and also ordered elements.

This is a photo of ice crystals that form in an aeroplane's window.

Reshoot: This time of the 'Finish' theme:
Original week 9:

Finish reshoot:

Hiya Gary,

O M G .... these two are fantastic

Week 16: now that is some Paradox and I love the colours and shapes the ice crystals have made on the window to make it look like a mathematical constellation. The gradient blue works well too.

Re-shoot of week 9: Wow what can I say .... except that you have definitely shown your progress in this shot. Once again I love this photo too. What a difference. Again love the colours and the reflection on the water is stunning. The whites look a tad bright, but don't distract me from the beauty of the photo.

Onto your Week 15 .... well after seeing the last two ... this one definitely gets a Wrong mark from me  However it is humerous ....

Well done

Cheers

Dawn :)

First thing I saw when I looked at your paradox was the Peruvian Desert "Nascar Lines"

I quite like the minimal, yet detailed effect.

Your reshoot, nice reflection. It still feels a little tight for me. I'd like to see a daytime photograph, on a cloudy day with more sky and a big stopper filter....

HI Gary, I seem to have missed yours thread for a few weeks. I love the chicks in your object photo, love the way they are tightly packed, and the colour is nice and vibrant and the dof is great. Like your wrong and paradox as well. I really like what you have done with your reshoot, a little tight on the crop, but the colours are very nice.

Thanks for the comments :)

About the reshoot, I agree that the framing is a bit tight but I don't have a wider lens ATM. (and there's a gentle slope behind so I can't stand further back).
I tried to get the framing identical to the original so it's just a change of lighting conditions, I guess it's not really a reshoot in that sense. I also agree the whites are too bright (in real life they're hideously bright), but it felt too much like cheating to selectively tone them down.

I might amble over their with a wide-adapter and see how it looks but I think the more industrial looking buildings nearby will creep into the frame then.

Week 17 is not for the squeamish.
Anywho, Week 17: Tropical:

17 - Tropical by ConicalFlask, on Flickr

Thanks so much again for paying attention! I really welcome (even very negative) criticism.

That's all I've shot so far! Now onto Power and Divided.

Beautiful Reshoot capture as well , love the reflections & lighting

Your TROPICAL shot is giving me the itchies...lol

Hiya Gary

 that is one scary looking bug .... what is it?

Pity some of the legs and wing is clipped.

I take it this bug is dead? I would have probably been running a mile

Cheers

Dawn :)
