Gardening 2016

I'd be happy with just a few grapes!
This was the summer before last..

These are Mueller-Thurgau, I planted 24 Pinot Noir last year and those did so well I may allow a few bunches to form this year. I'm well behind on their pruning though.

When do the rest of you prune roses if you grow them?

About Feb or March but it depends on what type (shrub, climbing etc)

So my Helenium Moerheim Beauty arrived a few days ago, looked a bit sorry for itself, put it into a larger pot on kitchen window and now looks a lot happier.

On the up side...all of my Acers have survived the (mild) winter and are starting to break their buds :)

On the down side, haircutting the bamboo will have to wait because although the resident hedgehogs are out and about (they have a purpose built house) there are a pair of Thrushes nesting deep in the bamboo now.

I potted on 96 plug plants today. I had ordered 2 packs of 48 perenials to make a bee garden. I have lavender, aquilegia, fox glove and echinacea. They were tiny but got them at a good price when they were on offer and they will grow on a bit in my polytunnel.

I have a couple of strawberry plants with flowers on. They are also in the polytunnel and as i've not seen many pollinators around, I got my little paint brush out.

Today was rotten weather wise but 18c in the tunnel. Next week it's to improve here so I will be weeding, grrrr.

So how is everyone getting as we near the end of May?

My 2 small pear trees look like they have have no fruit, in contrast to my apple (patio size) which is overloaded at present.

I have 2 grape plants both have bunches formed and it looks like I may get some grapes for the first time.

Tomato plants have been slow to grow (from seed) though I did get a 50p plant from B&Q (where they appeared to have given up watering 50% of their stock of all plants in my local one) that is looking good.

Cucumber plants also from seed on the other hand are growing well - will try some in my 'greenhouse' this year, as well as one or 2 outside.

Corn (bought) planted closer to the house the squirrels have left alone, but they are being eaten alive by the abundance of slugs. Am experimenting with beer traps and copper tape. Also grew some from seed that is a lot smaller but so far unscathed but still in pots.

Beans are growing well.

Have pea pods from the only pea plant that came up from the peas I planted in the ground in October last year, and the other peas are now doing well.

Lettuce grown from seed now ready for consumption.

Cosmos plants doing well though not big enough or in flower, but better than last year.

Kiwi tree in the balance but have buds so let's see.

Plum tree has loads of plums, may have to take some off (all my trees are small variety)

Raspberry looks like we will get quite a bit of fruit (2nd year).

Have potted up some foxglove and hollyhock for next year.

A quick question for the dahlia growers, all my dahlias are now out in their final pots and all look well apart from one. It has three stems two of which are healthy looking but the third stem has wilting leaves. It started lower on the lower leaves but seems to be moving upwards. Do I leave it and hope for the best or remove the stem?

Burn the whole plant.

Check against these symptoms:

Thanks guys, I checked against the symptoms on Alastair's link but I don't see colour change in the stem or leafs, only drooping leaves on the one stem. I'm fairly new to gardening (4-5 years ) and haven't had anything like this before.

Nod- does it really need such drastic action?

As a precaution, it might. Some plant infections are pretty rampant and are only destroyed by burning. At the very least take the problem plant well away from the others and cut out the dead/diseased/damaged stem. If the poorly plant recovers fully, keep it for next year (but keep an eye on it).

sounds like wilt to me,pull it up and get rid. Better to be saf than sorry
