Thinking about getting a garden shredder to deal with planned reduction in small trees, hedges, shrubs etc - in searching the main problems seem to be poor feed-through and poor cut.
Anyone got one?
Recommendations? :)

Been taking garden waste to the tip for a long time now, want to save the hassle and use the mulch really.

You might find that they are not quite as useful as they seem. They all have a maximum size cut stated, and you'll buy one thinking whizzo! In reality the maximum size is rarely able to be processed, especially if you are dealing with older, tough woody stuff. They are very labour intensive and it takes a long time to shift even a moderate amount of rubbish. Added to that is the almost constant need to be clearing away the cut stuff.

Then you think that composting will be easy. Well it ain't, not if you are cutting up woody stuff. If you are cutting up green stuff then throw it on the ground and run your lawnmower over it. That cuts it up nice and ready for the compost bin. The woody stuff is best taken to the tip where they have decent gear for cutting it up, and a compost heap to die for. Ever seen the compost heap at Kew Gardens?

Save your money: they are another idea that's good in principle but somewhat lacking in reality.
