Photographer Pat Pope received a request to use a picture with no fee and just a credit and posted an open letter on Facebook and The Guardian picked up the story...

I saw if first here...

And The Guardian piece...

What struck me was the apparent hypocrisy of the band if that's a correct description of what they are, I've never heard of them but apparently they've been outspoken about artists being paid for their work and yet they expect to use the photographers work without paying him? Hmmm I get it.

Anyway, it's there to be read and we can all make our own minds up where we stand.

I think alter bridge did similar although didn't credit the photographer, then had a hissy fit when someone suggested that downloading their music wouldn't be a problem

Quite amusing that the band fail to appreciate the irony, and all that codswallop about artist community helping each otheR. ..A bit like the Amanda Palmer crowd funding fiasco

It's a shame that photography is devalued to the point that folk lose their jobs. Shocking really.

In this example it's disappointing that artist betrays artist.

I wonder if their is a hierarchy of artists and musicians see themselves at the top of the tree and other lesser arts such as photography should be grateful for the odd crumbs thrown their way.

Pat's Facebook page is entirely open and so if you want the latest or to just ping him a message of support...

As a keen musician I've seen SO much of this. What a bunch of dicks. Butch Vig alone (drummer in Garbage and producer of Nirvana's Nevermind and countless others) is worth an estimated $60million.

Sometimes the richest people are the tightest.

I agree with the criticism though. The band should have offered at least the going rate and perhaps a bit more to show appreciation and loyalty as they'd worked with the guy.

Personally, the more I employ someone the more I offer them. Keeps them sweet and keeps the working relationship good and I get priority when I want to buy them in again :D
