Hey!

I'm Rhys. This is my first thread in the forum so forgive me if this is in the wrong place!

I'll be finished with my A-Level studies in July and have decided to do some travelling before going off to Uni the year after. I plan on working from July '12 up until the following May/June, so that gives me a few months to see the world.
My initial searches (and influence from a Canadian teacher at school) have brought up Canada as a great location; I'm really passionate about wildlife and the natural world, and I've been promised that Canada is the way to go. However, I recently went to Kenya with my family on holiday and I absolutely loved it. The photographic opportunities were awesome, and the two weeks just flew by.
Instead of a purely photographic trip, though, I'd love to do some volunteering with local projects, etc., but the photography will definitely be a big factor in my eventual decision!

What I'm asking, kind folk of TP, is for any kind of advice from those of you who may have done something similar, and the best location for such a trip. I'm not too fussed about luxuries, and am quite happy to take refuge in hostels/tents/blanket on floor job! Any advice would be thoroughly appreciated.

Thanks!

Have you thought about taking a trip to the US? eg. Yellowstone NP + Grand Teton NP, Glacier NP, Denali NP.

Ah, funny you should mention Yellowstone - that was also on my list. Have you been? I'd love some insider knowledge.

Don't have experience of either but I'd say a lone traveller would be safer in Canada than Africa

I've always fancied Yellowstone or a trip across America, it'll never happen now though, 50 married, 2 kids, mortgage etc etc etc

Do it now while you still can

Good advice :D

How much time do you have to travel?

I have around 4/5 months to travel, depending on when I've had enough of work!

Matt - I've been having a look at some of your suggestions today - Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc. - and it looks like that would be a good idea. They all seem relatively close together so I could minimise travelling time by going with that route.

Yeah I was thinking that too. Don't get me wrong, the people in Kenya were all amazing when we were there, but I just feel that Canada's a bit 'closer to home' with regards to culture etc.

My son spent 5+ months travelling/backpacking with a girl friend. They went via Dubai to India (Mumbai, Delhi and Kashmir) then to Singapore, Malaysia and on to Australia. Hired a camper for 40 days and drove from Sydney up the East coast then through the outback to Alice Springs. From there they drove down to Adelaide, Melbourne and back to Sydney. She staid in Australia with relatives while he went down to New Zealand, both North and South Islands. He then flew up to Los Angeles, greyhound bus to San Francisco and then back home via New York.
Lots to see and plenty of photo opportunities. I'm so jealous.

With 4 0r 5 months I would suggest heading to Asia. Much more interesting and way cheaper. You could see the best of the sub continent and s e Asia in that time.

Apologies for the lack of replies as of late, been busy with exams (ohhh, the plight of a teenager!).

Wow, that sounds like an amazing trip. I hope I can get someone to go with, I think it'd make me a lot more confident. As it stands I've got a friend who is partially interested, but I honestly don't think he'll follow through.

Interesting. I haven't even considered Asia as it stands. Oh there's so much to think about!!!
