Yes
Current PC has a bit of a flaky history with various BSODs so Ive decided to get rid.

Current spec is 150GB ssd for program files
500gb HD for data
1tb ext for backups

The 500gb houses data only, mainly music and pics. This is now full.

I would buy from PC Specialist as I like the stuff they sel, but am behind the 8 ball with specs currently.

Would like to keep budget around £600 ish if poss....

What would you spec ?

starting from scratch ?

if yes then you will have to see what the budget looks like after selecting the drives you need.

say if you want a 250gb ssd and 2tb hdd combo then I would image you might be restricted to the latest i3 cpu and 8gb ram.

I'm not sure if £600 will get the latest i5 cpu, 16gb ram and good ssd + hdd combo. If it does then that would be a good deal IMO

so yes try to get for example i5 cpu, 16gb ram, 250gb ssd, 2tb hdd and if not possible you may need to go to 13 with 8gb ram or something like that

I have an i7 6th generation with a 128gb ssd and 16GB RAM which is spare....windows 10 pro. Could do a classified if your interested. I'm not looking for much and would leave you plenty budget for your extras

Assuming you will keep your current monitor and peripherals and your really only going to be doing a new desktop then for a smidge over your budget (£657) you could get a Kabylake i5 plus 16GB ram and 250GB SSD drive.
The only caveat is you would have to build it yourself.
See below link for more info. Bear in mind that you could probably get the same spec if you tweak a few parts e.g. change the ram for a cheaper brand or change the case etc.
I put a 2TB external hard drive in the list as a means of backup but you may be comfortable re using tour existing back up storage.

There is no OS in there but Windows 10 can be purchased as a key from reputable sellers on ebay for not much money

I'd be interested to know how you identify these reputable Win 10 sellers on eBay, having failed in the past :-(

Part removed re windows based on above comments so as to avoid misleading the OP

Have a look here
https://www.cclonline.com/

They built mine
I5
16gb DD4 Ram
250gb SSD
1TB HDD
Optical Drive
3 yr On site warranty
Win 10 Home

For I think £600 ish

There are a lot of S/H bargains on Ebay in Computers including workstations with up to 48GB RAM!

But remember that workstations use ECC RAM which is NOT compatible with the non ECC RAM which you normally use.

No doubt Neil can expand on these.

Yes I buy ex business Dell OptiPlex USFF, HP elite 8300 SFF and similar ultrabooks.

But I don't waste my breath trying to advise alternatives that I prefer because they have £600 to spend in a shop on a new PC and come hell or high water they are going to spend £600 in curries or whatever

Was/is that aimed at me ?

@Gil Bev Linky doesnt work...

Does it have expansion bays so I can add a 2tb HDD sata drive ?

No, this post I aimed at you was the one below :

Fair enough...

Quick play around on Pc Specialist looks like I need to drop £800ish to get what Im after.
Or do I ?

Current spec is I3 at @3.2ghz with 4GB Ram I only hear it grunt when using LR.......

I think it's only got ability to hold 1 HDD - either the 2.5inch or 3.5inch size. Currently it's got the 2.5inch SSD that came installed - so I don't think you'll be able to get another in there - it's a very compact unit.

It does have plenty external USB ports - most of which are USB 3, so you could connect an external drive

They are expensive unfortunately.

Luckily AMD have made some very good CPU`s now so hopefully intel wont be able to keep charging £280 for the latest i7 that is only a few percent better than last years.

Im running an i3 6100 @ 3.7ghz with 16gb DDR4 RAM and both LR and Photoshop run fine.
If you can stretch to an i5 though i would definitely do so.

It also depends on the size of the files you are editing - the files from my 350D could be easily edited on my old duo core but I updated to an i7 with 16GB RAM when I got my 1Ds MKII because the older PC simply seemed to take forever.

Very true indeed!
Im editing 24MP RAW files from my Sony A5100 but i dont edit in big batches or do massive layered images etc so i think thats why i can get away with the i3.

It does really depend on workflow and file size

Files are uncompressed RAW and I think
About 40ish mb.
Only use LR to process.

Thanks for the help guys, as Ive got some other expenditure thats health critical coming up, Ive gone for the cheap option for now and just bought a 1tb drive to plug into old pc.

Hope to keep the old girl going until spring......

Good job you held off. I have been brushing up on what is going on in the PC world.

Intel have released the 8th gen CPU`s for laptops etc.
And the desktops ones in "fall" so in the next 8 - 12 weeks I imagine.

Anyone with sense will be holding off until then because the 7th gen will look old overnight as soon as 8th gen is in the shops
