Hi all,

I'm looking for true gaffer tape to secure back drops to painted walls.

Ebay has a lot of duct tape / gaffer tape adverts which seem mis-leading - which shop do you use please? Thanks Mandy
 
Be warned that "Real/Genuine" Gaffer Tape sticks so well that it can really damage what it is stuck to if it is removed.

I usually buy from Homebase/B&Q.

Incorrect, real duct tape, is designed to be removed without damage. You would be confusing this with gorilla tape.

As regards the original question, I've brought loads of gaffer tape, of ebay and never had any issues. Also use Amazon, where it's possible, to check reviews for the product itself.

You could be correct, sorry for any confusion.
 
It depends how sticky you want it to be.
I bought some own brand duct tape from Screwfix that would probably do you if you need to remove it without damaging the surface.
It wasn't sticky enough for my purposes at the time. Duct tape is ten times stickier and doesn't come off easily.
I was sealing a ventilation pipe to an extractor.
 
I buy gaffer tape for work from Canford Audio - http://www.canford.co.uk/Search?q=Gaffer+tap. If you want real gaffer, the type used by the BBC then this is the place, they also sell camera tape. I comes in different widths and colours and isn't particularly cheap. It tears easily and has a fairly strong grip. If you are worried about pulling off paint then you want something else like good quality masking tape but if you want to hold fairly heavy backdrops this is the stuff. It's worlds away from the rubbish sold as duct tape.
 
Many thanks every one - quite buy chance I walked passed a local art store and I bought a roll off their shelves. I haven't used it yet, but I'll update you with my success.
 
or failing that a bucket of cold water usually will work equally fine without taking them to A&E...
 
I came across some tape the other day on a tenement roof that was holding tiles together. Jeez i had to cut it with a Stanley knife as I couldn't pull it off. About as sticky as sticky tape can be.
 
Stage Depot do good matte gaffer for £6.50, it's the same stuff that most big studios and even panalux supply.
 
Local plumbers merchants is the place to go ask for closure plate tape, proper stuff used by plumbers so should be good!
 
I gave up on gaffer taping anything to my studio wales years ago it's great for removing the paint! I now just use either a background support, the hooks I've fitted of various walls or a C stand for smaller backgrounds. It saves me a fortune on decent white emulsion :)
 
We buy a lot of gaffa tape from CPC Ltd, been ideal so far, haven't had any problem with damage to walls, floors etc. Good range too.
 
My golden rule for any problem - if you can't fix it wih duct tape, you aren't using enough duct tape.
